Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Division of Academic Affairs, through the Office of the Provost, serves a pivotal role in supporting the academic enterprise of North Carolina Central University. This includes strategic planning, academic program development, instruction quality, research initiatives, enrollment management, and faculty/staff professional development. The Office of Faculty Affairs is responsible for supporting faculty who turn NCCU's academic mission into action through their teaching, research, and service. The Office of Faculty Affairs supports postdoctoral researchers, who are integral to the research, teaching, and learning activities at NCCU.
Primary Purpose of Position
The Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs manages and supports faculty-related academic processes. The Vice Provost assists in interpreting university policies and regulations related to faculty, and oversees faculty recruitment, appointments, promotions, tenure, professorships, awards, academic leadership development, and reporting. The Vice Provost will build strong working relationships across academic units and ensure the engagement and collaboration of relevant groups to foster highly effective scholars. The Vice Provost will take a life-cycle approach to tenure, recruitment, and retention of highly qualified and effective faculty.

The Vice Provost helps the departments comply with university requirements related to faculty. Other core activities include developing and coordinating faculty management activities, including annual evaluations, counseling, conflict resolution, consultation of the university Office of the General Counsel, and grievance processes and committees. Reporting to this position are the Associate Provost for Academic Programs and the Associate Provost for Institutional Research and Analysis/Chief Data Officer. Other duties include:

  • Coordinating audit responses and recommendations with Internal Audit.
  • Representing the Provost on standing committees and administrative advisory committees.
  • Leading academic units temporarily as needed.
  • Other relevant duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to lead institutional change and improve faculty excellence and student success.
  • Proven track record in academic and faculty affairs.
  • Strong skills in faculty development, team leadership, data analysis, and cross-campus collaboration.

Minimum Education/Experience

  • Doctorate degree in a relevant field that would qualify candidate for tenure at the Associate/Professor rank.
  • At least 7-10 years of progressive leadership experience in higher education at the department chair level or higher.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties

Faculty Reappointment, Promotion, and Tenure

  • Manage post-tenure review process; Guide and support faculty in the process of seeking reappointment, promotion, and tenure.
  • Ensure compliance with faculty evaluation and all processes related to faculty academic personnel actions (reappointment, promotion, tenure, post-tenure review) at NCCU.
  • Oversee workflows and timelines for candidate reviews at the department, college, and university levels. Set up and manage the digital platform, Faculty Success (aka Digital Measures), for conducting reviews.




Function Administrative

Faculty Recruitment, Recognition and Retention

  • Facilitate development opportunities for faculty by identifying recognition awards, scholarships and fellowships, teaching enhancement activities and courses, and leadership and professional development programs.
  • Manage academic achievement recognition processes, including special designations such as professor emeritus and endowed chair to ensure that the appointments comply with UNC System and NCCU policy requirements.

Faculty Development

  • Lead the Office for Faculty Professional Development; Responsible for developing and implementing a faculty orientation program for new faculty and development and implementation of a robust professional development program for faculty, department chairs, and deans.
  • Collaborate with the Department of Human Resources and the Academic Resources Management Office to provide a robust orientation program for new faculty appointed at every rank.
  • Collaborate with the NCCU Faculty Senate to ensure that the programming provided by this office is responsive to the needs of faculty.
  • Direct the Phased Retirement Program (PRP), which includes approving work plans prior to the Provost's approval of PRP applications, and working with the Human Resources benefits office on questions and issues related to the program.
  • Work with the Office of Institutional Research and Analysis on the COACHE national survey of tenure-track, tenured and non-tenure track faculty.
  • Partner with the Office of General Counsel and others as appropriate to provide relevant information to the Provost regarding grievances, recommended disciplinary actions (including the imposition of serious sanctions) and other faculty personnel matters. Follows up with deans/department heads, Human Resources, and others to implement decisions or other recommended courses of action.

Leadership Development for Academic Leaders

  • Establish a leadership development program for current department chairs, program directors and faculty who aspire to move in academic administration.
  • Conduct the new department head orientation and additional development and information sessions for department heads in partnership with the Office of General Counsel, Human Resources, and other campus units.
  • Advise on policies and programs for evaluating appropriate academic leadership.
  • Collaborate with deans and department heads to address issues involving faculty such as retention, personnel matters, and policy questions.

Faculty Policy Development and Governance

  • Serve in a lead role to draft, vet for approval, and maintain institutional policies related to faculty. Serves as primary advisor to ensure that college- and departmental-level policies/regulations on faculty matters are consistent and compliant with state, UNC system, and institutional guidelines.
  • Serve as the Provost's liaison to the Faculty Senate's Faculty Handbook Committee and the Research Committee.
  • Collaborate with the Office of General Counsel, Human Resources, Compliance Office, the Office of Institutional Research and Analysis, Academic Resource Management Office, Division of Information Technology Services, Office of Sponsored Research and Contracts, campus deans and academic department heads, the chair of the Faculty Senate and the appropriate Faculty Senate committees, as well as with the academic affairs division at UNCSO and other offices as necessary to ensure that such policies and regulations meet compliance requirements and serve the needs of faculty and academic units.

Postdoctoral affairs

  • Manage programs, services and resources to promote postdoctoral scholar career and professional development.
  • Serve as a liaison between postdoctoral appointees, faculty, administrators, and staff.
  • Coordinate responsibility for monitoring and applying policies that relate to postdoctoral appointments with key campus units.
  • Preparing policies and procedures relevant to supporting postdoctoral appointees.
  • Coordinating with relevant units to track and report statistics on the postdoctoral scholars.
