This position owns the fuel procurement, transportation agreements/third party carrier management, the fuel pricing strategy and fuel marketing for Meijer Express. Provides leadership for strategic and tactical direction for the fuel business with the responsibility to deliver the financial plan.

What You'll be Doing:

  • Drives the tactical direction of fuel for Meijer Express with the goal to make Meijer Express the most compelling fuel retailer for our customers by focusing on daily Fuel Pricing, Fuel Marketing, and the Meijer Express Fuel Presentation.
  • Negotiates favorable fuel supply contracts (price and security of supply) and negotiates fuel carrier transportation agreements (freight rates, safety, service).
  • Ensures that Meijer Express fuel pricing strategies are in alignment with fuel strategies as well as Federal, State and Local regulations for fuel product grades.
  • Utilize internal and external market information to anticipate vehicle transportation trends (internal combustion & electric) and future customer needs to drive brand and fuel product grade selection.
  • Visits stores (Meijer and competition) regularly to proactively understand fuel pricing, fuel offers, competitor location, competitor fuel marketing and store presentation.
  • Responsible for the overall direction and performance of the Meijer Express Fuel category and drives the financial plan to deliver gallon and fuel margin goals for the company.
  • Attends relevant trade shows/industry meetings to gather product information and establish business relationships with suppliers/carriers/industry experts.
  • Works with the Environmental, Compliance and Risk Management departments to include:
  • A working knowledge of underground storage tanks and piping (USTs), fuel dispensing equipment and the working knowledge of A, B and C certifications.
  • Assisting in the direction for emergency responses such as cross drops, a fuel spill or other fuel related emergency.
  • Uses statistical models and/or various analytical techniques to evaluate the effectiveness of current fuel pricing strategies by analyzing competitors' fuel pricing strategies, understanding market/customer trends, and drives company performance and fuel grade assortment, marketing, and pricing decisions.
  • Mentors, trains, and develops Fuel Analysts, Fuel Pricing Analysts & Associate Buyers.

What You Bring with You (Qualifications):

  • Bachelor's degree in business, statistics, economics; or the equivalent downstream petroleum convenience store fuel retail experience.
  • 5-10 years of downstream petroleum fuel experience (refinery to c-store) in a fuel supply chain logistics role (fuel supply, carrier management and/or c-store retail fuel pricing).
  • Fuel Pricing - multi-unit convenience store retail pricing responsibilities, experience with fuel pricing software packages preferred, P&L fuel gallon & margin responsibilities and c-store multi-unit operations experience a plus.
  • Fuel Supply - experience negotiating fuel supply contracts with large fuel suppliers/refiners with the experience and ability to manage the contractual process.
    • Deep understanding of downstream petroleum infrastructure including refineries, pipelines, terminals, petroleum transport trucks, fuel retailers and a working knowledge of fuel metrics (OPIS, Platts, Argus, RINS, etc.)
    • Experience with "Best Buy" fuel procurement software a plus.
    • Brings a network of supplier relationships and contacts.
  • Carrier Management - experience managing or working with internal or third-party fuel carriers and a solid understanding of the dispatch function and the daily fuel supply challenges faced by carriers, a working knowledge of "Fuel Dispatch Software" a plus.
  • Financial and business acumen, exceptional negotiating skills, the ability to navigate, evaluate and manage contracts and excellent communication skills (listening, verbal, written).
  • Strong organizational, planning, and time management skills; ability to multi-task & compartmentalize in a high stress environment while remaining cool under pressure.
  • Enthusiasm, Initiative, and a strong passion for retail.
    • Office computer skills; able to learn company systems and tools, preference for Microsoft application experience; Power BI & Dashboarding experience a plus and advanced Excel skills (v-lookups, pivot tables, macros, etc.) a plus.
