Summary: The Sustainability Department is dedicated to advancing environmental stewardship across the organization through strategic planning, operational improvements, and staff engagement and education. Sitting within Facilities Management, the department works collaboratively with key partners, including Engineering, Environmental Services (Housekeeping), Food and Nutrition Department, Supply Chain, Clinical Departments, and others. We work to build sustainable hospital operations, reduce waste and improve quality. The Sustainability Department has five key focus areas:
- Energy: Reducing energy consumption and transitioning to renewable energy sources.
- Food: Promoting sustainable, low-carbon, ethical and local foods.
- Transportation: Encouraging low-carbon commuting options and fleet improvements.
- Waste: Minimizing waste generation by increasing reuse, reprocessing and recycling efforts.
- Water: Conserving water resources and improving water efficiency.
Three primary focus areas guide the Sustainability Department's mission:
- Decarbonization Goals: Supporting the organization's targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, including achieving a 25% reduction by FY27 and reaching net zero by 2050.
- Tracking and Improving Sustainability Performance: Continuously measuring and enhancing performance in the annual sustainability program areas to reduce the hospital's environmental impact and improve standings in the Practice Greenhealth Awards.
- Creating a Culture of Sustainability: Providing opportunities for staff to participate in sustainability, and empowering staff to make environmentally conscious choices by ensuring that the environmentally preferred option is also the easiest and most practical choice.
The Intern role provides administrative and project support within assigned department, while gaining valuable, hands-on experience in a healthcare environment.The 2026 Sustainability Intern will focus their time on advancing waste minimization throughout MaineHealth. Solid waste produces significant greenhouse gas emissions and reducing the amount of solid waste we dispose of as a health system helps to advance the MaineHealth Strategic Plan goal of net-zero emissions by 2050 and supports care team engagement. Building upon the work of the previous Intern who completed a current state waste assessment, the 2026 Intern will work towards implementing the identified opportunities for improvement at each of the 12 MH facilities. They will work in collaboration with the Sustainability Committees and leadership teams. They will create project plans for each of the waste reduction initiatives and will develop a system for data collection and analysis to track progress. Examples of initiatives include:
- implementing CLYNK bottle and can recycling,
- launching single stream recycling,
- educating staff on proper waste segregation,
- expanding operating room recycling, etc.
Their day-to-day will involve working with a variety of stakeholders throughout MaineHealth to organize, lead and monitor various projects. It will require visiting hospitals, virtual meetings, emails, research and project management tasks.
