Experience, skills and competencies that lend themselves to this role: The Director, Scientific Affairs - Derma (U.S.) is the senior scientific and clinical authority for Beiersdorf's U.S. dermatological brands, accountable for translating global R&D investments into U.S.-relevant, compliant, and commercially impactful scientific strategies. This role is critical to sustaining and accelerating growth Beiersdorf Derma brands, and future U.S. Derma innovations by ensuring strong scientific differentiation, dermatological credibility, and defensible clinical evidence across launches, lifecycle management, and longterm brand equity. Reporting to the Vice President of R&D North America, the Director leads U.S. clinical strategy, claims substantiation, and scientific risk mitigation, and oversees a team of three responsible for all launch and postlaunch clinical testing and claims support. The role serves as a trusted advisor to senior leadership and as the medical-commercial bridge, enabling bold innovation and marketing while safeguarding scientific integrity, regulatory compliance, and brand reputation. The Director also acts as Beiersdorf's scientific liaison to the U.S. dermatology community, building trust and credibility through engagement with Key Opinion Leaders, scientific and medical professionals, and external stakeholders. This includes representing the company through scientific presentations, publications, advisory boards, and congress participation, reinforcing Beiersdorf's leadership in dermatological science. This hybrid position requires three days per week onsite at the U.S. Innovation Center in Florham Park, NJ, with periodic travel to Stamford, CT, and up to 30% domestic and international travel, including occasional evenings and weekends for critical meetings and conferences.
Your Tasks
Scientific & Clinical Leadership
- Serve as the lead clinical and scientific authority for all U.S. Derma brands.
- Translate global clinical and preclinical data into U.S.-compliant claims, positioning, and medical narratives.
- Define clinically relevant endpoints, study designs, and evidence strategies to support launches and lifecycle initiatives.
- Assess new product concepts and category expansion opportunities and advise on the optimal scientific approach.
Claims Substantiation & Risk Mitigation
- Develop and oversee safety, efficacy, and claims substantiation strategies for consumer, medical, and professional communications.
- Ensure compliance with FDA, FTC, NAD, and advertising standards, in close partnership with Regulatory and Legal.
- Proactively identify scientific, regulatory, and reputational risks and recommend mitigation strategies.
- Lead scientific responses to legal challenges, competitor claims disputes, and regulatory scrutiny.
Launch & Lifecycle Enablement
- Enable end-to-end scientific launch readiness, from early clinical strategy through market activation.
- Propose and execute lifecycle management study plans to refresh claims and support sustained growth.
- Manage the Derma clinical testing budget to deliver launches on time and within budget.
- Innovate and propose new testing methodologies beyond traditional CRO-based approaches.
Medical-Commercial Bridge
- Act as a strategic partner to Brand Marketing, Medical Marketing, Sales, Regulatory, and Legal teams.
- Translate complex clinical data into clear, actionable guidance for internal stakeholders and senior leadership.
- Review and approve scientific content across labeling, advertising, websites, PR, and medical materials.
External Scientific Engagement
- Lead U.S. engagement with dermatologists, KOLs, DOLs, and scientific influencers.
- Chair or co-lead Dermatology Advisory Boards and represent Beiersdorf at scientific congresses and external forums.
- Develop and execute scientific publication and presentation strategies to support launches and brand credibility.
- Train and support medical speakers, sales teams, and retail education on skin biology and product science.
Global Influence
- Influence global R&D, Medical, and Clinical teams without direct authority, ensuring U.S. needs are embedded early in global plans.
- Partner with HQ to shape study designs, endpoints, and evidence plans relevant to the U.S. market.
People Leadership
- Lead, develop, and mentor a team of Clinical & Scientific Affairs professionals.
- Foster a culture of scientific rigor, collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Compensation for this role
- 199k - 268k base annual salary

Your Profile
The Director of Clinical & Scientific Affairs at a minimum requires one of the following educational qualifications:
- PhD, PharmD degree or equivalent in Biological Sciences, Biomedical Science, Biology, Biophysics, Bioengineering with 10+ years of skincare experience in a cosmetic, OTC or pharmaceutical company.
- MS degree or BS degree Biological Sciences, Biomedical Science, Biology, Biophysics, Bioengineering with 14+ years of claim support and clinical testing experience in an industry setting.
Requirements:
- Proven leadership in Scientific Affairs, Medical Affairs, or Clinical Development within dermatology, skincare, OTC, or regulated consumer health
- Deep expertise in clinical study design, execution, interpretation and familiarity with a range of biophysical testing methods.
- Strong knowledge of U.S. regulatory and advertising frameworks (FDA, FTC, NAD)
- Demonstrated experience managing regulatory and legal risk for claims and communications
- Track record of KOL engagement, advisory boards, congress participation, and publications
- Experience influencing global stakeholders without direct reporting lines
- Highly motivated, proactive personality, with a sense of urgency, able to work well independently and in teams.
- Operates with high scientific integrity and sound judgment
- Comfortable making and defending difficult decisions under ambiguity
- Strategic, proactive, and businessminded
- Credible external ambassador with dermatologists and scientific peers
- Exceptional communicator able to bridge science, business, and consumer relevance
- Facility communicating proficiently with members of the external scientific and medical community and developing trustworthy relationships.

- Experience leading, developing, and motivating a team.
- Proficient computer skills, with the Microsoft Office, especially Excel and PowerPoint.
- Scientific publication track-record.
