Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Director of Counseling and Psychological Services, provides direct mental health services to our eligible student population. Such services include psychoeducation, diagnostic assessments, crisis management, treatment planning, and group and individual evidence-based treatment interventions. Provides relevant outreach services to the USI campus community and the greater Evansville community at-large. Documents all clinical contacts and services in a thorough and timely manner. Provides globally competent services consistent with established standards of care and adheres to all legal and ethical guidelines for the profession.

Duties/Responsibilities



  • Assess the mental health needs of students through diagnostic evaluations, clinical observation, psychometric instruments (relevant to the professional credential) and other clinically indicated means. Establish mental health diagnoses consistent with the most recent edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.

  • Apply knowledge of mental health theories, global competencies, psychopathology, and clinical research to establish case conceptualizations and develop client-centered treatment plans for a wide range of presenting concerns within the context of the developmental nature of the student population. Determine the clinically indicated level of care required, the need for specialized services and the ability of Counseling and Psychological Services to meet students' needs in accordance with established policies.

  • Provides evidence based individual and group intervention designed to assist the entire student population with a wide range of presenting concerns, and with the flexibility to offer these services both in-person and via tele-behavior health.

  • Work from a time-limited model of psychotherapy and maintain a full caseload (determined in conjunction with the Director of Counseling and Psychological Services).

  • Develop positive therapeutic relationships, assess progress, and explore alternatives as needed.

  • Provide assessment and treatment services in a sensitive and competent manner to all student populations.

  • Document all clinical services in a timely manner and in accordance with professional standards.

  • Assess level of risk, provide appropriate and timely crisis intervention. When clinically indicated, assist and coordinate higher level of care utilizing community mental health resources (including voluntary and involuntary hospitalization).

  • Adheres to a scope of practice that is consistent with established competencies as determined by education, training, experience, and legal standards. Provides services consistent with the standard of care for the profession and adheres to all legal and ethical guidelines.

  • Maintains and enhances professional competencies by attending workshops and conferences, obtaining relevant certifications and through membership(s) in professional associations.

  • Provides outreach and supportive programming to the university community with an emphasis on mental health awareness.

  • Provides regular and emergency consultation to faculty, staff, and other concerned parties.

  • Performs duties of specialized focus as assigned based on levels of training and experience.

Required Knowledge and Skills



  • Ph.D. or Psy.D. in clinical or counseling psychology from an APA-approved doctoral program; ABD considered. Must be licensed to practice independently as a Psychologist (with HSPP designation) in the state of Indiana.

  • Generalist training required.

  • Strong knowledge of mental health theory, research, and practice.

  • Significant knowledge of psychopathology, as well as developmental issues facing traditional and non-traditional students.

  • Significant knowledge of tele-behavior health and the specific challenges and limitations with regards to state licensure limitations, ethics, safety concerns, technology, and confidentiality.

  • Significant skills in assessment and treatment of multiple presenting concerns, diagnoses, and degrees of pathology.

  • Strong knowledge of Indiana mental health law.

  • Demonstrated creativity in developing educational programs involving students, faculty and staff.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and proficiency in oral and written communication.

  • Strong work ethic and a desire to work collaboratively within the Counseling Center, Student Affairs, and the University community.

  • Must be responsive to a high demand for services while managing unexpected crisis situations.

  • Basic computer skills required; experience with Titanium Schedule is desirable.


Preferred Knowledge and Skills



  • APA-approved pre-doctoral internship is preferred.

  • Developed specialized skills for working with certain populations of students or with specific areas of presenting concerns.

  • Special skills and experience relevant to substance abuse, group therapy, supervision of practical/internships, and/or those student populations underserved, under resourced or facing systemic barriers are strongly desired.

  • Experience in a university/college counseling center is strongly preferred.


Regular Work Hours/Travel Requirements


  • Standard office hours are Monday through Friday: 8:00 am - 4:30 pm.
  • Irregular hours (including nights and weekends) may be required.
