About the Team

Tesla's Service Engineering team is the bridge between vehicles in the field and the teams that design them. Wemonitormillions of vehicles worldwide, identifyemerging issues before they become widespread, build diagnostic tools that help service centers pinpoint root causes, and feed real-world data back to design teams to make the next generation better. We own the full lifecycle - from detecting a problem in fleet data, to understanding the root cause, to designing the repair procedure, tovalidatingthe fix.

Why This Internship
You'll have your own projects with real deliverables that ship to production. Your work will directly influence how Tesla services the HV battery systems on over a million vehicles worldwide. You'lllearn how a fleet-scale engineering organizationoperates- from the data infrastructure thatmonitorsevery vehicle, to the firmware that runs onboard diagnostics, to the service procedures that technicians follow in the field. Andyou'lldo it alongside a small, fast-moving team where your contributions areimmediatelyvisible.

What You'll Do

We're looking for a Summer Intern to join our High Voltage Battery(HVB)Systems team. You'llwork directly with our HVB Product Support Engineer on real problems affecting real vehicles. HV battery packs are the most expensive singlecomponentin the vehicle, and our team's work directlyimpactscustomer experience, vehicle safety, and warranty cost.

You'll get hands-on experience with:

  • Diagnostic tool development - building and improving automated onboard diagnostic routines that let vehicles self-identifyHV battery failures and actively recover when possible
  • Fleet data analysis - querying millions of vehicle telemetry records to surface failure trends, cell degradation patterns, and early warning signals across battery chemistries (NMC, LFP, 2170, 4680) and platforms (Model 3, Model Y, Cybertruck,Cybercab)
  • Root cause investigation - debugging field failures using CAN logs, service records, and telemetry data to trace symptoms back to their source, whether cell, module, pack, or system level
  • Battery compatibility & serviceability - supporting pack replacement strategies across platforms, including compatibility validation and retrofit procedures
  • Cross-functional collaboration - partnering with BMS firmware, battery design, quality, manufacturing, and field service teams to close the loop on issues from diagnosis to resolution

Example Projects You Might Work On:

  • Design and implement onboard diagnostic routines that actively repair the vehicle - recovering from faults, restoring functionality, and resolving issues directly on the car
  • Build Service User Interface (UI) panels that surface real-time vehicle data and diagnostics to users
  • Develop data-driven tools that help proactivelyidentifyand service at-risk vehicle populations before issues escalate
  • Investigate HV battery failures across vehicle platforms and trace root causes back to specific component-level failure modes
  • Build or extendautodiagnosticnetworks that automatically classify HV battery failure modes from real-world vehicle log data

What You'll Bring

What We're Looking For

  • Currently pursuing a BS or MS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or similar
  • Genuine interest in electric vehicle technology, especially battery systems and power electronics
  • Some experience with Python - you'll be writing scripts to query databases, process telemetry, and visualize trends
  • Some exposure tolargedataanalysis
  • Familiarity with LLM tools
  • Comfort reading and interpreting electrical schematics and system block diagrams
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving mindset - you like digging into messy real-world data to find the signal in the noise
  • Clear communicator - you'll present findings to engineers across multiple teams

Nice to Have

  • Familiarity with CAN bus protocols, battery management systems, or HV DC power systems
  • Experience with data visualization tools (Grafana, Tableau, matplotlib)
  • Exposure to C/embedded systems (our BMS firmware is in C)- familiarity
  • Coursework or project experience in electrochemistry, battery modeling, or power electronics
  • Experience with version control (git) and collaborative development workflows
