Required QUALIFICATIONS




Required Education:
One (1) year of post-secondary education with course work in human services, education, counseling, psychology, social work, ethnic studies, or a related field.
Required Experience:
Two (2) years of related experience in counseling, student advising, student activities, student mentor, or a related field is required.

Equivalency: Experience reflecting human services programs, workforce, community resources, career and college preparation advising, and demonstrated experience with group dynamics and interpersonal communication skills will be considered.
Licensure or Certification Requirements

Preferred QUALIFICATIONS










Preferred Education
Associates degree in human services, education, counseling, psychology, social work, ethnic studies, or a related field.
Preferred Experience

  • Recent work in a community college, workforce, or career center with adults.
  • Experience working with basic skills students.
  • Familiarity with the GED exam.
  • Experience with GED Manager strongly preferred.

Position Purpose:
The ABSE Student Advisor will serve as a resource for GED and Adult Basic Skills students by providing program, course, and GED exam information, identifying academic pathways that support student goals, and connecting to department, college, and community resources.
Essential Functions:
Essential Functions

  • Communicate with department faculty and staff, and use digital resources to track student GED exam scores, distribute vouchers, and support and encourage students through the GED exam process.
  • Outreach to exam-ready students.
  • Provide students with information about college programs, pathways certificates, workforce services, and degree path options.
  • Provide and/or refer students to resources that will advise students on educational goals, career and workforce goals, and program options for transitioning ABE/GED students to credit classes.
  • Provide and/or refer students to campus or community resources that will facilitate students' ability to progress satisfactorily in school and follow-up to ensure effectiveness.
  • Develop and maintain relationships within the ABSE department and college including with advising, tutoring, and student support services.
  • Assist in the retention of new and continuing ABE/GED students.
  • Use online student management tools to track student activities and progress.
  • Accurately track and maintain data for grant reporting and submit reports in a timely manner.
  • Problem solve and manage sensitive information with appropriate awareness of FERPA standards; maintain confidentiality and sensitivity to the privacy needs of students.
  • Other duties as assigned by manager.

Supervision Statement:

  • Reports to and works under the overall policy guidance of the College and Career Foundations Division Dean. Work is performed independently according to knowledge of College and departmental policies and procedures. A Project Coordinator provides daily supervision of work and is available to answer questions and troubleshoot problems on a daily basis.
  • Work is reviewed by observation of the quality of service provided to students.
  • This position may has the responsibility to assign tasks, provide priorities, train and check the work of student assistants, hourly employees, and volunteers.

Physical Demands/Working Environment:
This position works indoors and is exposed to usual office working conditions that includes office noises and interruptions. This position requires that an employee be able to sit or stand for extended periods of time; perform cognitive and psychometric work for more than six (6) hours a day. Work may require transporting materials up to twenty-five (25) pounds. Work safely.
