ITOM Discovery & CMDB Lead Engineer

JOB SUMMARY

The ServiceNow ITOM Discovery & CMDB Lead Engineer is responsible for architecting, implementing, and operating ServiceNow Discovery and CMDB capabilities at enterprise scale. This role serves as the technical authority for Discovery, MID Server architecture, CMDB data quality, and alignment to the Common Service Data Model (CSDM).

This position requires deep hands-on experience with infrastructure technologies (Windows, Linux, networking, and cloud platforms) and the ability to design, troubleshoot, and defend Discovery implementations in complex, environments.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Discovery & MID Server Engineering



  • Architect, deploy, and operate ServiceNow Discovery across on-prem and cloud environments.
  • Design Discovery strategies including credential management, network segmentation, scan schedules, and scope controls.
  • Deploy, harden, and manage MID Servers globally, including OS-level security, service accounts, and performance tuning.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot Discovery execution, MID Server performance, and ECC Queue behavior.
  • Lead root cause analysis and remediation for failed or inaccurate Discovery results.


CMDB Architecture & Governance



  • Own CMDB data quality, CI lifecycle, and relationship accuracy.
  • Configure Identification & Reconciliation (IRE), CI class promotion, and duplicate prevention strategies.
  • Ensure strict alignment with the ServiceNow Common Service Data Model (CSDM).
  • Prevent CMDB pollution through governance and reconciliation controls.


Infrastructure & Platform Collaboration



  • Partner with Windows, Linux, network, cloud, and security teams.
  • Translate infrastructure architecture into accurate CMDB representations.
  • Address security concerns related to scanning and credentials.


ITOM Capability Enablement



  • Support Service Mapping, Event Management, and ITOM Health.
  • Integrate ServiceNow ITOM with third-party enterprise tools.
  • Develop import sets, transform maps, and data policies.
  • Provide operational metrics on Discovery coverage and CMDB accuracy.



Leadership & Operational Ownership





    • Lead phased Discovery rollouts.
    • Maintain documentation, standards, and runbooks.
    • Mentor engineers and administrators.
    • Own failures and drive corrective actions.





MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Education

Bachelor's degree or, equivalent of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job may be considered.

Experience



  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in IT Operations or Infrastructure Engineering.
  • 5+ years hands-on ServiceNow ITOM/Discovery experience.
  • Strong Windows, Linux, network, and cloud administration experience.
  • Deep understanding of Discovery patterns, MID Servers, ECC Queue, and IRE.



Skills



  • Ability to identify issues, propose solutions, plan and execute with little supervision.
  • In-depth understanding of ITOM and ITSM processes, technology and methods applicable to platform management.
  • Good communication skills with the ability to detail technical solutions.
  • Ability to build and present solutions to senior management.
  • Collaboration-minded and able to work constructively with other teams to achieve common goals.
  • Strong background in developing and maintaining effective internal ITOM processes and procedures.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations



  • ServiceNow CIS Discovery or ITOM certifications.



PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Typical Office Environment requirements include: reading, speaking, hearing, close vision, traverse, bending, sitting, and occasional lifting up to 20 pounds.

Target Pay Range:$97,600.00to$122,000.00 -Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data
Target Bonus on Base:7.0%
