Job Description:

The Senior Desktop Engineer (VDI-Focused) is a senior technical role responsible for leading desktop and virtual desktop engineering initiatives across the organization. This position serves as a hands-on technical Subject Matter Expert (SME) with a strong emphasis on Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) platforms, including Citrix (CVAD / DaaS) and AWS WorkSpaces. This role is technical-leadership only (no people management) and is responsible for designing, implementing, optimizing, and supporting both physical endpoint and virtual desktop environments. The Senior Desktop Engineer partners closely with infrastructure, cloud, security, and end-user support teams to deliver scalable, secure, and high-performing desktop and VDI solutions.

Key areas of focus include:

  • Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops (on-prem and/or cloud-hosted)
  • AWS WorkSpaces (design, cost optimization, performance tuning)
  • Image engineering, profile management, and application delivery
  • End-user experience optimization and performance troubleshooting
  • Security, access controls, and compliance within VDI environments

Key Responsibilities

Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (Primary)

  • Act as the SME for VDI platforms, with strong hands-on expertise in Citrix (application delivery and full VDI) and AWS WorkSpaces
  • Design, implement, and maintain scalable VDI architectures aligned with business and security requirements
  • Engineer and manage gold images, patching strategies, and lifecycle management for virtual desktops
  • Optimize user experience, including login times, profile performance, application responsiveness, and graphics acceleration
  • Troubleshoot complex VDI issues across networking, storage, compute, identity, and endpoint layers
  • Partner with cloud and infrastructure teams on capacity planning, cost optimization, and resiliency
  • Evaluate and recommend enhancements to VDI tooling (monitoring, automation, profile management, image tooling)
  • Serve as a Subject Matter Expert for managed desktop solutions including:
    • Microsoft Configuration Manager (SCCM)
    • Microsoft Intune / Endpoint Manager
    • Microsoft Windows 10 / Windows 11
    • JAMF (macOS management)
    • VMware (vCenter / supporting infrastructure)
  • Engineer secure, standardized desktop builds for both physical and virtual endpoints
  • Lead OS upgrades, patching strategies, and endpoint lifecycle management
  • Develop automation and standardization to reduce operational overhead

Position Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent professional experience
  • 6+ years of experience in Desktop Engineering
  • 3+ years of experience supporting enterprise VDI environments (Citrix and/or AWS WorkSpaces)
  • Healthcare or regulated-industry experience strongly preferred
  • Strong expertise in Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops, including:
  • Microsoft Windows 10 / Windows 11 administration and troubleshooting
  • Microsoft Configuration Manager (SCCM)
  • Microsoft Intune / M365 Endpoint Management
  • Microsoft Active Directory and Group Policy
  • Windows Server 2016 or newer

Preferred / Plus Skills

  • FSLogix or equivalent profile management solutions
  • VDI monitoring and performance tools (Citrix Director, ControlUp, etc.)
  • Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) or other DaaS platforms
  • Scripting and automation (PowerShell)
  • VMware vCenter familiarity
  • JAMF (macOS endpoint management)

Salary Range: $91,000 - $136,500

Your actual base salary will be determined based on your unique skills, qualifications, experience, education, and geographic location. In addition to your base salary, this position is eligible for a discretionary annual incentive award based on your individual performance as well as the overall performance of the business.
