How You'll Help Transform Healthcare:Provides a wide range of support to the Legal Department in both day-to-day activities and special projects. Communicates with employees, patients, family members, courts, and the public. Drafts and prepares legal documents and correspondence. Assist other departments when needed.
  • Work alongside members of the Legal Department in the performance of assigned job duties, including conducting legal research, drafting documents, assisting in the review and revision of contracts, attending legal proceedings, attending client meetings, and assisting in administrative duties.
  • Prepares drafts of correspondence and legal documents of all types, including but not limited to guardianships, judicial authorizations, contracts, real estate documents and student agreements.
  • Responds to requests for information and documentation from various organizational departments, external auditors, and other agencies.
  • Proactively seek out work assignments and appropriately prioritize assignments.
  • Supervision: No supervisory responsibilities or duties.
  • Communication: Daily communication with senior management staff, employees, other departments, courts, and the general public. Actively participates at departmental staff meetings and communicates business and legal matters with management staff or other key stakeholders as appropriate.
  • Confidentiality: Maintains confidentiality of patient, personnel, department and company information.
  • Financial/Budgetary: Recommends cost containment measures to help meet financial goals.
  • Judgment: Works under general supervision and within established Carilion policies and procedures. Work involves application of basic knowledge and skills related to relevant job duties. Generally, refers problem-solving issues to immediate supervisor. Compliance with Department of Health & Human Services requirements and other applicable laws and regulations, The Joint Commission standards, and Carilion performance standards required.
  • Position Impact: Work directly impacts departmental effectiveness through support of general operations. High probability that errors in work are detected, moderate impact of undetected errors to confidentiality and fiscal health. Impact of work is departmental-wide.
  • Working Conditions: Work is performed in a normal office environment and may require moderate effort for such activities as bending, stretching, stooping, pushing or walking. Little or no exposure to injury or other health hazards.

  • Other: Requires ability to perform in a continually changing environment with tight deadlines.

What We Require:

Education: Bachelor's or associate degree in related discipline, paralegal certificate, or equivalent experience desired.

Experience: Minimum of two years' experience as a legal secretary, or equivalent experience.

Licensure, certification, and/or registration:

Life Support: N/A

Other Minimum Qualifications: Excellent verbal and written communication skills with internal and external personnel, including physicians, company and community leaders, staff, patients, and media personnel. Must be well-organized and detail oriented. Must demonstrate discretion, tact, diplomacy, confidentiality, and good judgment in dealing with routine inquiries, requests, and in handling difficult or unusual situations. Work requires knowledge and use of general office equipment and PC equipment and software.
