Location: Hybrid - Must work and live in the state of Michigan



Purpose: The purpose of this position is to contribute to pathogen genomic epidemiology activities within the Genomics Section at the MDHHS Bureau of Laboratories. This individual will collaborate with bioinformaticians, laboratorians, and various infectious disease epidemiology programs within MDHHS to enhance utilization of pathogen genomics data within public health. Primary responsibilities include genomic data analysis, visualization, and interpretation to support genomic surveillance and outbreak/cluster investigations for pathogens of public health importance. Additionally, this individual will contribute to pathogen genomics training and workforce development activities.



Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Generate, compile, and analyze sequence data outputs from pathogens of public health importance.
  • Integrate and visualize genomic data outputs with epidemiological and laboratory data to enhance genomic surveillance and support outbreak investigations.
  • Liaise with infectious disease epidemiology programs within MDHHS to identify genomic epidemiology needs and advise on genomic epidemiology activities.
  • Collaborate with bioinformaticians to identify issues or enhancements required for pathogen genomics bioinformatics pipelines.
  • Support coordination and facilitation of pathogen genomics training sessions or workshops, including on-site logistics.
  • Share summaries of projects and assessments via scientific publications and/or presentations.
  • Participate in national collaborations to further the development and implementation of genomic epidemiology in public health.
  • Provide assistance and insight for investigative work to develop improved analyses methodologies or services, as well as provide data for Department approved public health surveillance and research activities as needed.
  • Perform other work-related duties as required by management.
  • Always represent the best interests of MPHI and MDHHS.



Qualifications/Requirements:

Education: MS, MPH, or PhD in Epidemiology, Microbiology, or a field related to the requirements of the position.

Experience: 12 months of experience within the field of infectious disease or public health.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements: This position is a hybrid position, with the in-person portion being located in an office cubicle within a laboratory setting.Physical Activities: Standing, lifting, carrying, kneeling, bending, squatting, keyboard entry- daily. Conditions/Hazards: Potential dust, odor, fumes, chemicals, biological agents,

Must have ability to work at a computer and operate normal office equipment.
