Winston-Salem State University is seeking a Faculty Development Specialist for the Center of Innovative and Transformative Instruction.

Winston-Salem State University ( WSSU), a constituent institution of the University of North Carolina System, invites applications for the position of Faculty Development Specialist. The Center for Innovative and Transformative Instruction ( CITI) is an inclusive, supportive, and collaborative common area for faculty, staff and administrators to pursue innovation and transformation in higher education teaching and learning. This position plays a critical role in advancing faculty excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service by designing and implementing comprehensive professional development initiatives that support faculty success and student achievement.
The Faculty Development Specialist reports to Director for The Center for Innovative and Transformative Instruction within Academic Affairs and collaborates closely with faculty, academic leadership, and campus partners to foster inclusive, innovative, and evidence-based teaching and learning practices.
Key Responsibilities

  • Design, coordinate, and deliver faculty development programming focused on effective teaching, learning assessment, instructional technology, inclusive pedagogy, and student success.
  • Support onboarding and ongoing professional development for new and continuing faculty, including workshops, learning communities, seminars, and institutes.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Faculty Affairs, academic departments, deans, and key campus units to identify faculty development needs and align programming with institutional and UNC System priorities.
  • Provide individual and group consultations to faculty on course design, pedagogy, assessment, and the use of instructional technologies.
  • Assist with faculty development related to accreditation standards, program review, and quality assurance initiatives.
  • Support grant-funded and donor-supported initiatives related to teaching innovation and faculty success, as applicable.
  • Assess the effectiveness of faculty development programs and prepare reports to support continuous improvement and accountability.
  • Stay current with best practices and emerging trends in higher education, faculty development, and instructional design.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of the mission and strategic goals of Winston-Salem State University.

Department Required Skills

  • Master's degree from an accredited institution in Education, Higher Education, Instructional Design, Curriculum and Instruction, or a related field.
  • Experience working in faculty development, instructional support, teaching and learning centers, or a related higher education environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of evidence-based teaching and learning practices.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and facilitation skills.
  • Demonstrated competence teaching at the undergraduate level.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, students, and staff.
  • Demonstrated experience in coordinating multiple projects or work tasks.


Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

  • Doctoral degree in a relevant discipline.
  • Experience working within the University of North Carolina System or another large public higher education system.
  • Experience supporting faculty across multiple disciplines and appointment types (tenure-track, non-tenure-track, clinical, adjunct).
  • Familiarity with instructional technologies, learning management systems, and digital teaching tools.
