Job Description

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is hiring experienced Outside Machinists! Step into a pivotal role where your mechanical expertise ensures the maintenance and repair of critical industrial equipment, driving the cutting-edge work of our vital mission supporting the world's best Navy.



As an Outside Machinist (Mechanic), you will perform routine and non-routine maintenance and repairs on a wide range of industrial equipment with minimal supervision. Types of equipment include: gas/diesel engines, pumps, tractors, loaders, compressors, water jets, drill and hydraulic presses, and others. You will also obtain and maintain a variety of essential qualifications, including Contamination Worker, Lockout-Tagout, Silica, DOT, Fire Watch, Fall Protection, Man-Lift Operator, and any other radiological, environmental and safety qualification deemed necessary.



Essential Duties:



  • Conduct preventative maintenance, diagnose and repair malfunctions, and replace worn or broken parts to keep machinery in optimal condition.
  • Install new industrial machinery and mechanical equipment.
  • Use diagnostic tools and mechanical knowledge to identify the root cause of equipment failures.
  • Work on variety of mechanical systems, including hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical components.
  • Comply with and enforce safety, criticality, environmental, and radiological requirements.
  • Maintain records of activities, repairs, and equipment performance.
  • Read and interpret blueprints and schematics.
  • Report non-conforming conditions using the Deficiency Reporting(DR) processes as required by the applicable procedures.
  • Qualify for Contamination Worker, ESS, Lockout-Tagout, Silica, DOT, Fire watch, Fall Protection, Man-lift Operator, and any other radiological, environmental, and safety qualification deemed necessary by the supervisor.



Physical demands of this position includebeing able to bend, stoop, climb ladders, work at heights and wear fall protection equipment. The position could require rotating shift work and overtime as necessary to support mission needs.

Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill

  • High school diploma and a minimum of 5 years of mechanical experience



*Must qualify as a Contamination Worker, Lockout-Tagout, Silica, DOT, Fire watch, Fall Protection, Man-lift Operator, and any other radiological, environmental, and safety qualifications deemed necessary by the supervisor.

Preferred Skills

  • Millwright/Industrial mechanic or related Military certifications.
  • Gas/diesel engine repair experience.
  • Pump repair, alignment, and replacement experience.
  • Experience maintaining heavy equipment, tractors, loaders, hydraulics, and compressors.
  • Familiar with operating fabrication equipment, waterjet, drill and hydraulic presses, shears, plate racks, weld processes, etc.
  • Knowledge in methods, practices, and techniques of maintaining industrial equipment.
  • Familiar with tele-manipulator removal/install and maintenance.

Pay Range

$32.24 - $40.42 hourly

Jobs categorized as subject to a collective bargaining agreement will adhere to the pay rates, wage increases, progression schedules, and other parameters identified and negotiated in said agreements. Wages and other compensation details are subject to change based negotiated changes to the collective bargaining agreements.

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is operated for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) by Fluor Marine Propulsion, LLC (FMP), a wholly owned subsidiary of Fluor Corporation.
