We are currently seeking a detail-oriented and adaptable individual to join our Sterile Processing Float Team. Primary responsibilities of the Sterile Processing Technician include:

  • Serve as an instrument technician within the Surgical Supply division of the main operating rooms under the general supervision of the Sterile Processing Tech Manager and the Management Service Officers (MSO)
  • Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge and proper use of various sterilization methods
  • Process and document instrument trays through decontamination, ensuring all patient moveable equipment is thoroughly cleaned, inspected, and assembled with disposables for readiness between uses
  • Manage the distribution of patient equipment from the Main Operating Room in accordance with departmental policies for proper charging and tracking
  • Operate steam and H2O2 sterilizers, sonic equipment, washers, heat sealers and dumbwaiter. Store, date and rotate supplies according to TJC and CMS guidelines
  • Conduct equipment rounds to retrieve soiled items and ensure accurate patient-use charges, as well as correctly mixing and applying chemicals
  • Operate and troubleshoot various sterilization and departmental equipment, assembling processed items with proper labeling and documentation, and ensuring all sterilization parameters are met before releasing items
  • Monitor and process trial and loaner equipment, generating inventory and restock reports, and verifying the accuracy of received supplies against orders while resolving discrepancies
  • A thorough understanding of supply ordering and inventory management is essential, including pick lists, charge entries, worksheets, labels, stock par levels, and bin location updates. The role also supports annual and other required inventories, with additional tasks assigned as needed

This position floats to various units within the UCLA Health system based on the patient census and the skills of the staff. Hospital locations include but are not limited to the following:

  • Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center
  • UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center
  • UCLA West Valley Medical Center

Salary Range: $33.11-$33.11 Hourly

Qualifications

We're seeking a highly-skilled, self-motivated professional with:

  • Graduate of accredited Sterile Processing program or Surgical Tech program or 2 years of relevant experience,required
  • Certified Central Service Technician Certification (CRCST) from the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA),preferred
  • BLS from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association,preferred
  • Ability to lift surgical trays up to 25 lbs, maneuver case carts up to 200 lbs, and stand for extended periods.
  • Working knowledge of aseptic technique, sterile fields, and Operating Room decontamination principles. Strict adherence to infection control regulations.
  • Demonstrated ability to properly clean, maintain, and inspect surgical instruments and equipment.
  • Proficient in operating sterilizers and decontamination tools. Familiarity with bacteriology and medical terminology preferred.
  • Effective verbal and written communication in English. Maintains cooperative relationships and demonstrates courteous, respectful behavior with staff, patients, and families.
  • Serves as a knowledgeable resource for sterilization techniques, equipment use, and product information. Supports team members with guidance as needed.
  • Consistently performs tasks with precision, ensuring high standards of accuracy in all responsibilities.
  • Adheres to UCLA Perioperative Services policies and procedures, maintaining professional standards at all times.
  • Ensures a safe working environment, proactively identifies and reports hazards, and follows safety protocols.
  • Demonstrates a positive attitude, adapts to workload changes, uses time efficiently, and contributes to a collaborative team environment.
  • Attends required in-services, workshops, and safety drills. Assists in onboarding and skill development of new staff.
  • Properly rotates and inspects supplies using FIFO method. Ensures package integrity and chemical indicator accuracy.
  • Effectively prioritizes tasks, communicates limitations, offers alternatives, and works independently across assigned shifts.
