Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Student Intern.

The Health x Housing Lab is seeking a Summer Scholar (Student Intern) for a 10-week, part-time experience in the summer of 2026. This is a paid position. The goal of the HxH Lab Summer Scholars Program is to build a pipeline and foster the career development of individuals dedicated to future work at the intersection of health and housing. The HxH Lab Summer Scholar will contribute to ongoing research projects, participate in seminars and meetings, and receive opportunities for career development related to research, housing policy, and health. The position is based in New York City.
The Health x Housing ("health by housing") Lab in the Department of Population Health at NYU School of Medicine focuses on three key activity areas: 1) conducting research to build the evidence base for initiatives, programs, and policies at the intersection of housing and health; 2) offering evidence-based advice to inform policy and other interventions related to health and housing; and, 3) providing education to expand the reach of practice-relevant evidence on health and housing. The Lab has a specific focus on homelessness, but its work also encompasses housing instability, quality, supply, and affordability issues. The Labs work is shaped by an Advisory Committee that includes people with lived experience of homelessness as well as other relevant stakeholders. Job Responsibilities:

• The Summer Scholar will be a core member of our Health x Housing Lab team and will participate in all Health x Housing Lab meetings during their 10 week internship, as well as lead and assist with various special projects. Specific activities for the Summer Scholar will be developed in conjunction with the Scholar at the start of the program but are expected to include:
  • Involvement in ongoing HxH Lab research projects. This may include qualitative data analysis, literature review activities, and other activities depending on project timelines and scholar interest.
  • Assistance with HxH Lab event planning, project development, and administrative tasks.
  • Participation in weekly HxH Lab team meetings and presentations.
  • Opportunities for engagement with partners, including the HxH Lab Advisory Committee, Speakers Bureau and Peer Network, Summer Scholar alumni, and other community partners.
  • Participation in NYU School of Medicine educational opportunities, including research seminars offered by the Department of Population Health, weekly presentations with the Emergency Medicine x Social Determinants of Health (EMxSDOH) Lab, career chats with the Community Service Plan, and Health Equity Summer Series by Institute for Excellence in Health Equity.
• The Summer Scholar will have the opportunity to work with an individual who has lived expertise of homelessness and/or housing instability, to engage in bidirectional learning and exchange of ideas throughout the internship.
• The Summer Scholar will be expected to produce at least one final product (e.g., a report, abstract, paper, or presentation) by the conclusion of their experience and to write a short final report outlining their summer experience, and will also be expected to log their activities weekly.

Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify you must have a The student intern must be a full-time student in a degree-granting program, or if working in the summer months (Mid-May through Mid-Sept), must be planning to return to full-time status in the fall. Must be able to commit to 10 weeks of part-time (20 hours/week) employment to occur over the months of June, July, and/or August 2026.

Preferred Qualifications:
Dedication to research as a mechanism to improve health and advance positive change at the intersection of housing and health.Ability to work effectively with diverse, interdisciplinary partners. A commitment to housing justice. Strong writing and communication skills. Approaches challenges with a learning mindset. Self-motivated and self-directed, is very comfortable working independently. Follows through on commitments. Individuals who have lived experience with homelessness or housing insecurity are encouraged to apply.

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $16.50-20.00 Hourly. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
