About us

One team. Global challenges. Infinite opportunities. At Viasat, we're on a mission to deliver connections with the capacity to change the world. For more than 35 years, Viasat has helped shape how consumers, businesses, governments and militaries around the globe communicate. We're looking for people who think big, act fearlessly, and create an inclusive environment that drives positive impact to join our team.

What you'll do

The Integrated Solutions Business Unit is seeking a visionary and technically versatile Systems Engineer to act as the "glue" that holds our complex projects together. While specialized engineers focus on specific components, you will focus on the whole-ensuring that disparate technical pieces work together seamlessly to achieve the project's mission goals.

In this critical role, you will manage complexity by bridging the gap between high-level business needs and technical execution. You will be responsible for the system throughout its entire lifecycle, from initial concept and design through development, testing, and eventual retirement.

The day-to-day

Definition & Design
  • Requirements Analysis: Interview stakeholders and customers to translate their operational needs into strict technical requirements.

  • System Architecture: Design the high-level logical structure of the system, determining subsystem tasks and defining the interfaces through which they communicate.

  • Risk Management: Identify potential failure points early in the design phase and develop robust mitigation plans to ensure project success.

Integration & Testing
  • Integration: Oversee the assembly of disparate parts, ensuring that software code and physical hardware components function correctly as a unified system.

  • Verification: Execute rigorous testing to prove that the system meets all defined technical requirements ("Did we build the product right?").

  • Validation: Confirm that the final system meets the user's actual mission needs and operational goals ("Did we build the right product?").

Cross-Functional Leadership
  • Interdisciplinary Bridge: Act as a translator between multiple disciplines-including software, hardware, and logistics-to ensure requirements are understood across all teams.

  • Systems Thinking: Analyze how changes to individual components affect the entire system balance, managing trade-offs between performance, weight, power, and range.

  • Communication: Explain complex technical issues to non-technical managers while effectively communicating business goals to technical engineering teams.

What you'll need

  • 10+ years' experience a systems engineering or technical support role, preferably within the satellite communications or defense industry

  • Possess deep expertise in IP networking (TCP/IP, OSPF, BGP) and broad knowledge across SDN, SATCOM, and Edge Cloud technologies

  • Confirmed experience of the V-Model framework and its application to complex government contract lifecycles

  • Ability to interpret complex technical drawings and schematics while optimizing total system balance rather than individual component performance

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Telecommunications or a related technical field, or equivalent experience

  • US Government position. US Citizenship required
  • Active DoD Secret clearance or ability to obtain when administratively feasible
  • Ability to travel up to 10%

What will help you on the job

  • Relevant certifications such as CCNA or CCNP and/or Cloud Architecture (AWS, Google, Microsoft)

  • Knowledge of government security standards, including Type 1 encryption and HAIPE devices.

  • INCOSE CSEP or ASEP certification preferred.

  • Meets DoD 8140/8570 baseline requirements for IASAE Level II (e.g., CISSP or CASP+).

  • Active DoD Secret Clearance
  • Experience with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) tools and DevSecOps principles within a defense acquisition environment.

  • Direct experience working with US government and DoD customers (e.g., USAF, USMC, Army, or Special Operations).
