Job Summary

The Counseling Faculty position begins in Fall 2026 and is part of the Counseling Department at Phoenix College, a learning-focused institution. This position provides counseling services and instruction within our degree programs. The successful candidate will provide culturally appropriate and responsive counseling to help our students succeed in their personal, academic, and career journeys. The successful candidate will also provide instruction to a very diverse student body through our Associate's degree in Counseling, our First Year experience program, and our Behavioral Health certificate program.

Essential Functions

Provide personal development, academic, and career counseling for students. Respond to crises and perform crisis triage management. Refer to appropriate resources on and off campus.

Develop curriculum, teach, and assess in-person and/or online First Year Experience (FYE), Counseling (CAP), Behavioral Health Sciences (BHS), and Career and Personal Development (CPD) classes to a minoritized student population. Develop culturally responsive pedagogy and curriculum, course syllabi, and materials which include learning centered strategies to engage students and promote student success. Conduct learning outcomes assessment.

Provide consultation and collaborate with campus faculty, student services departments, staff, and administrators. Engage in the academic life of the college by participating in district-wide, campus, and departmental activities.

Work with students struggling with basic needs insecurity by providing resources related to rent/utility assistance, child care options, and food assistance. Work closely with the Counseling Department programs including Bear Necessities, DES Community Assisting, and our H.O.P.E. Initiative.

Conduct outreach programming, including develop and present workshops to a variety of audiences including community members, administration, staff, faculty, and students.

Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

A Master's degree in Counseling AND completion of the following graduate-level coursework:
  1. Counseling Theories and Techniques (minimum 3 semester credit hrs/5 quarter credit hrs)
  2. Personality Theories or Human Development (minimum 3 semester credit hrs/5 quarter credit hrs)
  3. Testing Theories and Applications (minimum 3 semester credit hrs/5 quarter credit hrs)
  4. Group Counseling Theories and Techniques (minimum 3 semester credit hrs/5 quarter credit hrs)
  5. Career Counseling Theories and Resources (minimum 3 semester credit hrs/5 quarter credit hrs),
  6. Individual Assessment (minimum 3 semester credit hrs/5 quarter credit hrs)
  7. Practicum, supervised Practice, or Internship in Counseling.


Desired Qualifications
  1. Experience providing culturally appropriate and responsive professional counseling.
  2. Experience teaching and assessment of counseling, first year experience, college success/preparatory, or career courses in an educational setting.
  3. Experience triaging and assessing mental health crises and facilitating community referrals.
  4. Experience working with minoritized populations, e.g, first generation, Latinx, American Indian, Black/African American, LGBTQ, differing immigration status, individuals with housing/food insecurity, individuals with disabilities, and/or individuals who have experienced foster care.
  5. Experience with developing outreach or workshops in student success initiatives, mental health/wellness, social justice, and/or student retention.
  6. Experience collaborating and navigating multiple roles, and maintaining professional boundaries within a multidisciplinary setting.
  7. Bilingual (any language).
  8. One (1) year of full-time, relevant MCCCD experience within the previous two (2) years.
