About the Job

The primary function of this position is to support professional research staff and graduate student researchers. Daily tasks involve maintenance and upkeep of laboratory workshop and experimental facilities. Undergraduate employees participate in construction, setup, and demolition of experimental facilities. This job commonly requires picking up materials from vendors throughout the metro area. The job could also entail assisting graduate students and scientists with data collection or collecting data on research projects independently. Some projects require working off campus. Other projects are primarily conducted outdoors in varying types of weather conditions. The variety of tasks encourages adaptation and requires motivated problem solving, which develops a wide range of skills while exposing students to the many aspects of research.
This job has physical requirement and requires bending, lifting, kneeling, walking, and standing for periods of time.

The St. Anthony Falls Laboratory (SAFL) is an interdisciplinary fluid mechanics lab and educational facility at the University of Minnesota. Located on Hennepin Island in the Mississippi River in the heart of Minneapolis, SAFL houses engineers and scientists who collaborate across disciplines to solve fluids-related problems in the Earth-surface environment. SAFL's vision encompasses both science and practice, beginning with basic research and moving through application, decision-making, and management.

Qualifications

Minimum requirements
* Undergraduate degree seeking student in good academic standing.
* Ability to work shifts of 3 hours or more, totaling 9-15 hours a week during semester and 30-40 hours weekly over summer and winter break.
* Training and experience with basic hand and power tools.
* Willingness to work outdoors in all types weather conditions.
* Capable of lifting and carrying 50 lbs.
* Have valid driver's licenses with a good driving record.

Preferred qualifications
* Formal training with hand tools and power tools. For example, a high school shop class or employer based training.
* Experience operating forklift, bobcat, or other similar equipment, will train as needed.
* Experience with construction, fabrication, or related work.
* Mechanical aptitude and problem solving skills a plus.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $16.00/hour

Student workers are eligible to participate in the Student Health Benefit Plan, if they maintain 6 or more eligible course credits within a given semester. The same applies for Undergraduate Students, Graduate Assistants, Residents, Fellows and Interns.
