Soft Craft Superintendent Position Summary

The Soft Craft Superintendent is responsible for the overall field leadership, coordination, and execution of all scaffolding, painting, and insulation (SPI) activities in support of construction, turnaround, and maintenance projects. This role ensures soft craft operations are executed safely, efficiently, and in alignment with project schedule, quality standards, and cost objectives.

The Soft Craft Superintendent serves as the primary liaison between SPI subcontractors, field engineering, project controls, and client representatives to ensure seamless integration of soft craft work within overall construction activities.

Key Responsibilities

Field Leadership & Execution

  • Provide direct oversight and coordination of all scaffolding, painting, and insulation activities across assigned work areas (OSBL and ISBL).

  • Lead daily field execution to ensure safe, productive, and high-quality work performance.

  • Align manpower, tools, materials, and access requirements to maintain construction momentum.

Planning & Coordination

  • Participate in Plan of the Day (POD), gang box meetings, weekly planning sessions, and progress meetings.

  • Ensure SPI work is properly sequenced to support mechanical, piping, electrical, and civil activities.

  • Identify and mitigate potential schedule impacts, access conflicts, and resource constraints.

Safety & Compliance

  • Champion a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with site-specific safety policies and procedures.

  • Conduct daily safety meetings and field observations.

  • Enforce safe work practices and intervene when unsafe conditions or behaviors are identified.

  • Ensure scaffold erection, insulation installation, and coating applications meet safety and regulatory requirements.

Quality & Technical Oversight

  • Verify all installations meet design specifications, inspection requirements, and quality standards.

  • Coordinate required inspections and ensure proper documentation prior to turnover.

  • Provide constructability input and assist in resolving technical challenges in the field.

Schedule & Cost Control

  • Monitor productivity, manpower levels, and work progress.

  • Provide accurate field feedback to planning and project controls.

  • Maintain cost awareness in T&M and unit-rate work environments.

  • Support completion forecasting and ensure work is delivered within budget and schedule commitments.

Interface Management

  • Coordinate SPI activities with other craft disciplines to optimize space, access, and equipment utilization.

  • Serve as the primary point of contact between subcontractors, engineering, planning, and client teams.

  • Proactively remove barriers to execution and maintain alignment across stakeholders.

Documentation & Closeout

  • Ensure all required reports, inspection records, and turnover documentation are completed accurately and on time.

  • Support final project closeout and client handover activities.


Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical training or trade certification preferred.

  • 8+ years of industrial construction experience, with 3+ years in a supervisory or superintendent role.

  • Demonstrated experience managing scaffolding, painting, and insulation scopes in live plant or turnaround environments.

  • Strong understanding of construction sequencing, scheduling, and productivity tracking.

  • Knowledge of industrial safety standards and regulatory requirements.

  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications, and work packages.

  • Strong leadership, communication, and coordination skills.

  • Ability to work in high-paced, schedule-driven environments.
