About the Position:


The primary role of the Men's Soccer Assistant Coach is to recruit and coach top student-athletes. The Assistant Coach provides teaching, coaching, and technical expertise needed to allow the student-athlete to compete at their highest competitive potential. Additionally, it is a primary responsibility to be cognitive to all coaching and/or teaching duties associated with the program. This is to include, but not be limited to, oversight and management of the safety and well-being of those student athletes assigned to their coaching care, and usage of applied data analytic concepts for modeling and statistical evaluation of player and team performance. In the absence of the Head Coach, this position is expected to act on behalf of the Head Coach on any and all related program issues. The Assistant Coach will assist the Head Coach in all aspects of a highly competitive Division I program.


Responsibilities:


Teaching, Coaching, and Recruiting:



  • Utilizes sound teaching techniques in the conduct of game preparation and practice sessions;
  • Assists in making strategic decisions in contest situations;
  • Collaborative planning and assistance in all training sessions through the season;
  • Participates in recruiting and assists the Head Coach in the evaluation of student-athletes;
  • Assists Head Coach in developing and implementing the overall recruiting strategy to effectively recruit the best student-athletes within the admissions, financial, and regulatory constraints established by the University, A10, and NCAA;
  • Maintains a safe and healthy environment for the student-athletes;
  • Uses data analytics to help improve the players and team by evaluating performance statistics;
  • Application of data analysis using performance dashboards, database management, training load and injury risk analysis, predictive analytics, and recruitment and talent identification models;
  • Works with individual players and helps them develop on the field through video analysis;
  • Participates in opponent scouting and preparation of set pieces;
  • Participates in Alumni Relations initiatives and connections with athletics alumni;
  • Provides campus tours and assists in recruit visit coordination;
  • Abides by and promotes the aims, goals, and objectives established by the Athletic Director and Head Coach;
  • Abides by and promotes the policies, guidelines, rules, regulations, and criteria established by the Athletic Director and Head Coach for the student-athlete;
  • Knows, understands, and assures that student-athletes abide by all University, Atlantic 10, and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rules and regulations;
  • Knows, understands, and abides by all University, A10, and NCAA rules and regulations;
  • Be aware and abides by the rules of confidentiality (Buckley Amendment);
  • Understands and abides by proper procedures of due process in dealing with the student-athlete and staff; and
  • Follows administrative procedures established by the University and written up in the Department Staff Handbook.


Act as Team Liaison to:



  • Equipment office staff to order, monitor, and control all team equipment;
  • Business Office and Coaches Support Assistant on program operations, logistics, planning, and team travel;
  • Academic Services (study hall and tutoring);
  • Social Media Management for Men's Soccer Program; and
  • Coordinating community service relationships for the team.


Performs other duties as requested by the Assistant Vice President/Director of Intercollegiate Athletics or Sport Administrator.


Required Qualifications:



  • Master's degree in related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Advanced degree or training and work experience at a level that equates to an advanced degree;
  • Experience playing or coaching in a Division 1 soccer program;
  • Experience with soccer in a college level environment;
  • Game knowledge; and
  • Must currently possess an appropriate, active, valid motor vehicle operator's license that meets all of GMU's requirements for operating state vehicles and equipment under Mason's Vehicle Use Policy 1411 https://universitypolicy.gmu.edu/policies/vehicle-use/. The Office of Risk Management reserves the right to review the driver's licenses and Motor Vehicle Reports (MVRs) of all candidates selected with employment contingent upon a favorable review.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Master's degree in related field;
  • Typically, 4 years of coaching or playing experience at the college level;
  • Experience using applied data analytics and performance modeling for team performance analysis and development;
  • Experience with goalkeepers; and
  • Background with recruiting domestically and internationally.
