What to Expect
Tesla is seeking a Controls Engineer to join its Cell Development Lab team in the Bay Area, CA. We are looking for motivated and enthusiastic individuals to help accelerate the world's transition to sustainable energy. The primary work location is Fremont, CA, with parallel project coverage in Palo Alto, CA - approximately 25 miles apart.
What You'll Do
- Support new equipment and continuous improvement projects including support for on-site commissioning and machine validations as well as providing troubleshooting for existing systems
- Design and implement industrial automation systems (PLCs, HMIs, servo drives, VFDs, sensors, actuators)
- Develop structured, maintainable, and reusable PLC/HMI code
- Create robust process/machine control sequences for processes like pick-and-place, dispensing, coating, pressing, mixing, and testing
- Design electrical schematics in AutoCAD or E-Plan
- Collaborate with Process, Equipment, and Maintenance teams on requirements and scheduling
- Follow control project best practices, ensuring proper documentation and timely updates
- Maintain control software in accordance with team procedures
- Present project updates, troubleshooting results, and conduct technical deep dives and analyses
What You'll Bring
- Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent experience
- 4+ years of engineering experience in the automation controls and instrumentation field
- Hands-on experience with one or more PLC systems: Beckhoff, Siemens, Omron, Mitsubishi, or Allen-Bradley
- Experience with motion control systems
- Experience with industrial communication protocols such as Ethernet, RS-232/485, EtherCAT, and/or Profinet
- Strong understanding of electrical design using AutoCAD or E-Plan
- Knowledge of NFPA 70, NFPA 79, UL 508A, and ISA standards
- Field experiences on troubleshooting end-to-end control systems, including power distribution, electrical components, instrumentation, PLCs, and HMIs
- Experience with lithium-ion battery cells is a big plus

Expected Compensation
$91,600 - $195,600/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits
Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.
