About the Role

The Anchorage Cranes, Maintenance & Facilities Manager position is responsible for directing and managing the Maintenance & Facilities Department, including the Terminal cranes in our Anchorage, Alaska, location. Direct responsibilities include ensuring our internal and external customers receive safe operating equipment such as container handling equipment, containers, and chassis. This position further provides support to Kodiak and Dutch Harbor maintenance functions and crane maintenance as needed.

Financial responsibilities include preparing, tracking, and analyzing budgets with direct input to and from the Director of Finance and General Manager. In addition, he or she will control labor costs and material costs while maintaining the safety and welfare of all personnel.

Supports the operational needs and requirements of safety, security, marine, rail, equipment control, car gang, and warehousing by collaborating with the Anchorage General Manager and the Alaska Cranes, M&F Manager and implementing operational requirements for the Alaska Tradelane. Analyzes practices and processes to develop recommendations for improving safety to reduce occupational injuries and updates Standard Operational Procedures (SOPs) to improve the efficiency of the terminal.

What you'll do:

  • Implements and maintains corporate, division, and applicable government standards, both federal and state, to include DOT, Federal Motor Carrier, U.S. Coast Guard, and OSHA.
  • Responsible for all facility and yard maintenance. Completes expenditure requests and sources, and coordinates with vendors to complete the scope of work.
  • Works with the Anchorage General Manager in developing and preparing operating budgets and repair and maintenance budget for the yard, terminal, and shop facilities.
  • Assist with auditing of Crane Maintenance.
  • Must be able to utilize technical writing skills to complete Corporate Expenditure Requests (CERs).
  • Provides financial review and analysis of variances for the Anchorage management team.
  • Negotiation and implementation of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and participation as a member of the negotiating team.
  • Must be able to understand and administer the CBA and act independently to provide consistent, fair, and impartial disciplinary actions and resolve disputes.
  • Cross train with the Alaska Cranes, M&F Manager, to oversee preventative maintenance and tasking reviews of the crane maintenance vendor.
  • Develops standards of best practices for processes.
  • Maintain a productive operation with particular attention to meeting the fiscal year operating goals.
  • Investigates incidents involving damage and/or injury and prepares accurate and concise accident reports to comply with safety and damage prevention programs.
  • Utilize Maintenance Management system to monitor and audit regulatory preventative maintenance requirements and inventory.
  • Understands workflow and utilizes company computer systems to ensure accurate information is obtained from and transferred to the databases for efficient equipment maintenance and cost control.
  • Support and communicate with management or foreman at all Alaska locations on various administrative/maintenance management tasks, as needed.

And these qualifications:

  • 10-15 years of power equipment and facilities maintenance experience required, including a minimum of 5 years of management and leadership experience.
  • Budget repair and maintenance cost allocation experience and the ability to create and manage an operational budget.
  • Knowledge of automotive, heavy equipment (including diesel engines, generators, and hydraulics), welding (including fabrication and repair), and refrigeration repairs.
  • Current on the latest developments in the technical and functional field of repair and maintenance of power equipment and facilities, along with project management skills for major onsite upgrades to the yard and facilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to lead meetings, present information, and complete documents that require technical writing skills.
  • Develops relationships and treats people as valued team members. Possesses a positive attitude, with people skills in managing a large union workforce.
  • Prior quality control experience.
  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • Some travel may be required, along with working in a shop and warehouse environment. The work environment is occasionally outside in all types of weather, and the noise level is moderate depending on the type of work being performed.
  • Must be flexible to work and support a 24-hour operation to include working holidays and weekends as needed.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a TWIC card.
  • Valid Alaska driver's license.

Extra credit if you have:

  • Bachelor of Science degree with emphasis in electrical or mechanical engineering is preferred.
  • Prior experience with a union workforce and understanding of Collective Bargaining Agreements preferred.
