DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As a CDL Operator in Somerset County, you will play a vital role in supporting highway and bridge maintenance operations. Your primary duties include operating trucks, loaders, and other essential equipment as assigned. You will be required to maintain a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with the air-brake restriction removed and operate all equipment for which you have been trained and certified. During your probationary period, you will become certified on a heavy truck, a loader, and at least two additional pieces of construction equipment. You will also complete and document all required pre- and post-operation inspections each day in accordance with departmental and legal standards.

When not operating equipment, you will perform flagging duties to ensure safe and effective traffic control. You will also take on a wide range of manual labor tasks using both motorized and non-motorized tools-including shovels, rakes, hammers, lutes, chain saws, compressors, jackhammers, tampers, hand mowers, trimmers, routers, patching machines, and heating kettles. You'll be expected to select and use tools properly, minimize wear and damage, and report any missing or broken equipment.

Your work will support essential maintenance activities such as cleaning culverts, cutting grass and brush, erecting signs, digging ditches, and repairing guiderails and barriers. Through these responsibilities, you will help keep Pennsylvania's roadways safe, functional, and well-maintained for the traveling public.
