The Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, in conjunction with
ECU Health Medical Center, provides clinical services in anatomic pathology and clinical pathology for hospital patients and clinic patients.
The mission of the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine is to improve the health and well-being of the citizens of eastern North Carolina and beyond by delivering high quality pathology services, by providing exemplary education, and by creating new knowledge through research.

| Job Duties |
Head of Blood Bank/Transfusion Medicine. The Transfusion Medicine Service at
ECU Health Medical Center supports a 974- bed tertiary care medical center with an active Level I adult and pediatric trauma service as well as comprehensive clinical specialty services including hematology/oncology, cardiovascular surgery, and solid organ transplantation. The successful candidate will join a clinical pathology group with 7 other clinical pathology faculty. The successful candidate will manage the day-to-day clinical operations of the
ECU Health Medical Center blood bank and provide transfusion medicine consultation services for clinicians. Responsibilities also include participation in the after-hours, weekend, and holiday on-call consultation for transfusion medicine and clinical laboratory services in collaboration with other clinical pathologists. As faculty for the Brody School of Medicine at
ECU, teaching of pathology residents and other clinical residents/fellows and active participation in departmental conferences, quality and institutional committees is expected. Clinical research opportunities exist but are not required.
Fixed Term (12-month) or Tenure Track position available at the title / rank of Clinical Assistant Professor, Assistant Professor, Clinical Associate Professor, Associate Professor, Clinical Professor, or Professor.
Employment in this position provides eligibility to participate in the
UNC Optional Retirement Program (
ORP) which offers matching employer contributions and employee control of investment choices, along with eligibility to participate in various Voluntary Supplemental Retirement Plans (401k, 403b, 457). This position is not eligible to participate in the NC Teachers' and State Employees' Retirement System (
TSERS). Additionally, this position offers multiple voluntary options for Medical, Dental, Vision, and Life Insurance as well as various supplemental plans including Critical Illness, Flexible Spending Accounts, Cancer, and Disability. While this position is not automatically eligible for the NC Teachers' and State Employees' Retirement System (
TSERS), new hires transferring from another North Carolina state agency and current
ECU employees transferring internally who had been enrolled in
TSERS in their previous employment will continue participation in
TSERS. These individuals may be able to elect to participate in
ORP if they had not been offered that option at the time of their initial enrollment into
TSERS.
Employment is contingent upon the availability of funds. |
| Minimum Education/Experience |
MD or DO from an appropriately accredited institution, or completed foreign medical education accepted and recognized for
ECFMG Certification. Board certified or Board Eligible in Clinical Pathology or Anatomic Pathology/Clinical Pathology (American Board of Pathology). |

Eligibility for an unrestricted North Carolina medical license. Board Certified or eligible for board certification. |
| Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education |
3+ years of experience is preferred.
Training in histocompatibility and immunogenetics (with
ASHI certification) is a plus.
Board certification in additional area of clinical pathology (e.g chemistry, hematopathology, microbiology, molecular pathology and/or pathology informatics).
Experience in a large health system. |
