Primary Purpose of Position
To create, promote, and implement employee wellness opportunities for Appalachian State University faculty and staff, develop and lead wellness education and training programs, teach group exercise classes, supervise part-time staff and students, and help plan, and implement special events.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Public Health or Public Health Education, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Essential Job Functions
Health Promotion for Faculty and Staff is a unit of the Appalachian Institute for Health and Wellness which serves Appalachian State University's Faculty, Staff, Retirees, and Spouses. Our primary purpose is to promote employee wellness through health and wellness education, facilitate exercise facilities, provide preventative screenings, and work with campus partners to build a culture of wellness for all.

This position works closely with the Director of Health Promotion for Faculty and Staff in advising Appalachian State University employees on a variety of fitness and health-related topics. This person will develop, coordinate, and lead individual and group exercise and wellness programming. This individual maintains comprehensive reports for all fitness activities and health/educational programming and works within health-related software systems to organize and utilize health information to work with clients. This position maintains open communication between all staff, participants, university departments, and local physicians through emails, direct conversations/meetings, and announcements.

Additional duties of this position include supervision of part-time staff; CPR Skills Checks, facility maintenance, and data collection.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position

  • Knowledge and ability to facilitate Personal Training programming, recruitment, and training of personal trainers andinterns.
  • Responsible for assisting in training/mentoring new student personel, and as a weight room attendant.
  • Responsible for providing shadowing opportunities with undergraduate interns in personal training, group class instruction, fitness assessments, and data collection.
  • Responsible for weekly and monthly facility maintenance, cleaning, and communication of service needs. Document occurrences and concerns.
  • Responsible for coordination on preventative maitnenace sub contractor.
  • Responsible for opening and closing shifts of the main Varsity Gym location.
  • Responsible for data collection about personal training and group exercise classes.
  • Provides a minimum of 50 % time to personal training clients, two individualized workouts per week (in-person and or virtual).
  • Must provide data reports to the HPFS Director to meet quarterly and semester deadlines.
  • Knowledge and ability to facilitate Group Exercise Class programming, recruitment, and training of instructors.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively at all levels of management.
  • Ability to guide employees to proper resources whenever help is needed and motivate participants to achieve higher wellness expectations.
  • Knowledge of the NC State Health Plan's employee wellness opportunities and updates is essential.
  • Knowledge of health and wellness concepts and the ability to find local and state resources to promote to employees
  • Ability to develop positive working relationships and collaborate across campus partnerships.
  • Ability to provide supervision to non-student temps, students, and interns.
  • Acquire knowledge and certifications related to program development and service delivery, including training others in CPR, teaching group exercise classes, worksite wellness, and motivational interviewing.
  • This position requires strong communication skills, working in a team environment, leading interns and students in program development, and implementation.
  • Ability to learn and lead the use of software programs to assist with data collection and promotion of HPFS services, including Google programs, Touchnet, Microsoft Office/Excel, Qualtrics, Canva, Constant Contact, and Wellnessliving.
  • Ability to promote Health Promotion for Faculty and Staff services, events, and programs on a continuous timeline with independence, branding, and consistency.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Health-related fields such as Exercise Science, Public Health, Health Education, Health Promotion or related field
  • Experience working in a public or college public health, employee wellness, and or health promotion setting

Consultation/Advising:

  • Counsel/support/educate individuals and groups targeting chronic diseases and improving self-management of chronic disease
  • Support participant's needs with great communication, empathy and follow through on resource navigation.
  • Listen to the needs of individuals, and/or groups and report back to the team to develop strategies to decrease barriers to those wellness goals.
  • Be familiar with on-campus employee resources and state employee resources to provide in a timely manner.
  • Think big picture and develop sustainable steps to reach team goals.
  • Use and advice on appropriate behavior change models including Stages of Change along with updated information and evidence-based strategies.
  • Follow up with individuals on health concerns and goals
  • Identifying barriers for the client to overcome
  • Recognizing appropriate strategies for the client to obtain his/her fitness-health goals


Client/Customer Service:

  • Develop and implement health education programming and perform one-on-one and group health education based on identified needs and specific health topics.
  • Promote health and education programs and benefits, using technology including web and resource development
  • Assist with program evaluation and quality metrics


Communication:

  • Recognizing clients' different learning styles (visual, auditory, kinesthetic).
  • Responding to clients' well-being through the use of active listening and non-verbal communication.
  • Communicate effectively with individuals and groups, as well as different community professionals for the promotion of health programs and support for individual needs.
  • Develop new and sustain current promotional processes.
