Summary
The Nursing Professional Development Specialist is an APN responsible for developing and providing evidenced based educational programs. Responsibilities include development and teaching orientation programs, providing in-service educational programs and continuing education programs. Supports nursing staff interested in conducting clinical research and participation in professional development activities. As we are migrating to EMR, interest/aptitude in informatics is essential.

Essential Functions
-Utilizing evidenced based practices and research, participates in the orientation program for new Nursing Staff employees.
1.1Ensures an orientation process whereby all nursing staff are held accountable for competence described in the basic orientation program.
1.2In collaboration with Nursing Directors, defines competency in select areas of knowledge/skill required at the unit/program level.
1.3Provides core lecture content on an ongoing basis as outlined in the orientation program.
1.4Develops orientation curriculum content that is evidenced based. Reviews teaching materials and evaluates program annually.

-Utilizing evidenced based practices and research, participates in the planning, provision, and evaluation of in-service educational programs.
2.1Collaborates with Leadership group in assessing the learning needs of staff.
2.2Assists in the coordination and provision of annual review classes.
2.3Facilitates and coordinates specific continuing education events, both centralized and decentralized.
2.4Participates in evaluation of educational programs and ongoing program planning.

-Utilizing evidenced based practices and research participates in the planning, provision, and evaluation of unit-based educational activities for nursing staff which enhance role expectations and professional growth.
3.1Assists Nursing Leadership in assessing learning needs for their units.
3.2Consults with Nursing Leadership, as requested, to assist in planning and evaluating unit programs.
3.3Presents a specific program at the unit level, as requested.
3.4As requested by Nursing Leadership, provides clinical supervision to staff nurses and mental health specialists.
3.5Engages nursing staff in unit based projects that support scholarships, such as facilitating clinical research and participation at professional meetings.

-Oversees the continuing education provider approval program.
4.1Initiates protocols and procedures to assure compliance for continuing education provider approval programs.
4.2Prepares all documents and forms to award contact hours for educational programs.
4.3Prepares application and supporting documents to maintain accreditation as a provider of nursing continuing education units.

-Responsible for nursing student placements.
5.1 Maintains professional relationship with university and college schools of nursing.
5.2Meets with instructors of schools of nursing to review affiliating students' program/unit assignments.
5.3Assures contracts with schools of nursing are in place, assuring compliance of hospital criteria.
5.4Establishes student and instructor guidelines and reviews and updates annually.
5.5Maintains records of student compliance and key elements of orientation.
5.6Participates in evaluation of student experiences while on affiliation at McLean.

-Contributes to development and implementation of nursing department manuals with responsibility specifically for the procedure book.
6.1Ensures that procedures developed are consistent with existing hospital procedures, those established by regulatory agencies and professional organizations.
6.2Establishes and implements procedures review and approval mechanisms.
6.3Coordinates implementation of new procedures with Nursing Administration, clinical managers, Staff Development, and staff nurse procedures representatives.

-Contributes to effective interpersonal and community relations to ensure the quality of patient care and to promote a positive image of McLean Hospital.
7.1Promotes patient privacy and confidentiality at all times according to established procedures.
7.2Promotes positive, supportive, courteous communications to patients, families, visitors, and hospital personnel.
7.3Provides information and feedback to staff regarding guest relations principles and practices.
7.4Collaborates with other departments of the hospital and outside agencies to meet the identified needs of patients.
7.5Participates in hospital wide committees, task forces and special projects.

-Maintains commitment to professional growth and competency through ongoing activities that promote professional role development.
8.1Completes all mandatory annual review classes.
8.2Conducts and/or contributes to nursing research.
8.3Participates in professional development meetings such as APNA.
8.4Participates in the annual performance appraisal process.

Education
Bachelor's Degree Nursing required and Master's Degree Nursing preferred or Doctorate Clinical Psychiatry preferred

Registered Nurse [RN - State License] - Generic - HR Only required

Experience
5 years of progressively responsible psychiatric nursing experience required and Previous experience as educator preferred and Previous experience working with nursing informatics or information systems preferred

- Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills, ability to utilize the nursing process and work collaboratively.
