Senior Officer, Protective Operations



The Senior Officer is part of the protective operations team, reporting to the deputy director. The protective operations team works to ensure the safety of foundation employees worldwide. This role is responsible for high-risk journey management, emergency medical response and assistance, medical operations, event security support, executive protection, and delivering training to foundation staff. Travel to high-risk areas with short notice is typical for this role. Typical threats in high risk areas include: widespread militant and criminal violence, kidnappings for ransom, banditry, and terrorism.



What You'll Do



  • Lead journey management for employees and contractors into high-risk geographies to include direct support to senior leadership, and security augmentation to foundation hosted events.
  • Effectively mitigate the threat of abduction, criminal activity, violent crime, and banditry while supporting employees in high-risk areas, particularly during ground movements and while lodging.
  • Respond with a high level of competency during security and medical emergencies internationally to ensure employee health and safety.
  • Provide timely, thorough assessments of risks and threats to foundation activities globally in advance of and in response to an event that could potentially threaten the safety or health of foundation people, property, or programs.
  • Monitor worldwide threats and changes in risk environment that would require an elevation or de-escalation of risk rating in collaboration with the Global Security Risk Intelligence team.
  • Advise on changes to key vendors' assessments of regional risks.
  • Participate in program working groups to be informed and manage all necessary protective measures for foundation staff and executives globally as appropriate to the level of risk.
  • Design and maintain training programs for the protective operations team in order to maintain defined critical skills. (e.g., firearms, defensive tactics, advanced driving skills, and emergency medical support) as assigned.
  • Reviews daily threat information both internationally and domestically to identify potential threats to the foundation, augment security needs, and provide recommendations to travelers and management regarding to potential risks and opportunities.



Core Responsibilities



  • Journey management for employees travelling to high-risk areas, including direct support to senior leadership and special activities as assigned.
  • Providing timely assessments and mitigation strategies to counter threats to foundation activities globally.
  • Monitoring global threats and changes in risk environment in collaboration with the risk intelligence team.
  • Monitoring and advising the risk intelligence team on changes to trusted security partner assessments of subnational risk.
  • Collaborating effectively with internal program teams to ensure foreseeable risks are considered and all necessary protective measures for foundation staff and executives are implemented.
  • Designing and participating in training programs, as assigned, for the protective operations team to maintain critical medical and security skills (e.g., firearms, defensive tactics, advanced driving skills, and emergency medical support)
  • Reviewing daily threat information in order to identify potential threats to the foundation.
  • Augmenting and assisting the Seattle campus security team as a member of the emergency response team.



Your Experience



  • Significant international experience working in high-risk environments or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to develop and deliver new Global Security training content and to conduct protective operations appropriate to the level of risk globally.
  • Extensive knowledge of protective operation procedures in both permissive and non-permissive environments.
  • Ability to effectively manage vendor relationships, expectations, and outcomes to achieve best results for the foundation missions.
  • Experience in emergency medicine and knowledge of open-source research and report writing on assigned threats and geographies.
  • Support inclusive culture through modeling behaviors and actions; escalate issues in a timely fashion to appropriate stakeholders.



What You Bring



  • Experience: Executive Protection, Emergency Response Teams (ERT), Protective Security Detail (PSD), or Residential Security Teams (RST).
  • Certifications & Credentials:

    • Valid Guard Card & Firearm Permit
    • U.S. Passport & Driver's License
    • High School Diploma or GED
    • Completion of Executive Protection or Residential Security Academy
    • Physical Readiness Test (PRT) & Meet-and-Greet evaluation
    • Background Investigation & Random Drug Screening

Preferred Qualifications



  • Prior military, law enforcement, or ERT experience
  • Specialized training in crisis management, emergency medicine, or incident response
  • LEOSA/HR 218 or multi-state CCW permit
  • CPR certification
  • EMT license
  • Familiarity with Corporate and/or Residential Security Technologies, Tools and Processes
