Job Description

Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:00am - 3:30pm

PURPOSE:

The Welder supports PCC Carson City's aerospace casting operations by performing precision Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW / TIG) repairs on aerospace investment castings. This role restores dimensional and structural integrity to castings through controlled weld repair in accordance with customer specifications, welding procedures, and quality standards. The Welder works with a wide range of alloys including nickel-based superalloys, stainless steels, and other high-performance aerospace materials. Welder Levels 1-3 represent increasing levels of certification, skill, and technical responsibility within PCC's weld repair program.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS (ALL LEVELS)

TIG Welding Operations

  • Perform Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW / TIG) repairs on aerospace castings in accordance with approved welding procedures and technique cards.
  • Work from shop orders, specifications, weld maps, and written instructions to determine weld location, filler material, and repair requirements.
  • Plan welding sequence including part preparation, preheating, weld application, and finishing operations.
  • Repair casting defects including cracks, non-fill, porosity, pits, slag holes, or other discontinuities.
  • Apply weld build-up where required to support machining operations or restore dimensional requirements.

Welding Setup & Process Control

  • Select appropriate filler rod, electrode type, current settings, and other welding parameters based on alloy and repair requirements.
  • Exercise care to achieve proper weld penetration and avoid defects such as undercut, porosity, or slag inclusion.
  • Perform weld repairs while maintaining dimensional stability and metallurgical integrity of castings.

Inspection & Quality Verification

  • Perform visual inspection of weld areas before and after welding operations.
  • Inspect parts for casting defects including cracks, porosity, distortion, or non-fill conditions.
  • Use measuring devices such as micrometers, calipers, gauges, and fixtures to verify dimensional compliance.
  • Ensure weld repairs conform to blueprint specifications and inspection requirements including penetrant and radiographic inspection where applicable.

Equipment Operation

  • Operate electric and gas welding equipment and maintain proper welding equipment setup.
  • Utilize fixturing and backup tooling to support weld repairs and maintain dimensional stability.
  • Operate rote tooling or hand tools as required to smooth and finish weld repairs.

Documentation & Workflow

  • Review weld maps and technique cards to verify repair requirements before welding begins.
  • Access computer systems to log time, track work orders, and update production records.
  • Maintain required documentation and records of welding repairs performed.

Safety & Housekeeping

  • Follow all plant and department safety procedures and maintain proper housekeeping practices.
  • Safely operate welding equipment, lifting devices, and tools.
  • Identify and report unsafe conditions, defective materials, or unusual operating conditions.

General

  • Train or assist less skilled personnel when assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support plant production goals.

LEVEL 1

Scope: Entry-level certified welder performing TIG weld repairs on standard castings under supervision.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Perform weld repairs according to technique cards and welding procedures.
  • Complete weld repairs on assigned alloys while meeting quality and production standards.
  • Assist with part preparation, weld setup, and fixturing.
  • Maintain welding certifications for assigned parts and alloys.

LEVEL 2

Scope: Fully qualified welder capable of independently performing TIG weld repairs across multiple alloys and casting configurations

In addition to the skill of a Level 1 Welder:

  • Perform independent weld repairs on complex castings and a variety of aerospace alloys.
  • Select appropriate welding parameters based on job requirements.
  • Diagnose weld repair challenges and apply appropriate techniques within approved procedures.
  • Support troubleshooting of weld repair issues and recommend process improvements.
  • Assist with training and mentoring Level 1 welders.

LEVEL 3

Scope: Advanced welder performing complex weld repairs and serving as a technical resource for welding operations.

In addition to the skill of a Level 1 & 2 Welder:

  • Perform advanced weld repairs on intricate or critical aerospace castings.
  • Reconstruct damaged casting sections and perform complex weld build-ups.
  • Develop solutions for difficult weld repairs and casting defects.
  • Assist with development of welding techniques, fixturing, and repair procedures.
  • Provide guidance and mentoring to Level 1 and Level 2 welders.
  • Support continuous improvement efforts related to weld repair processes.

PREFERRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • TIG / GTAW welding training or certification.
  • Experience welding aerospace alloys such as nickel-based or copper-based alloys.
  • Ability to read weld maps, technique cards, and technical drawings.
  • Understanding of metallurgy and heat treatment processes.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Work is performed on the manufacturing floor in a weld booth environment.
  • Ability to sit, stand, or lean while welding for extended periods during the shift.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 35 pounds independently; heavier items require lifting devices or assistance.
  • Frequent use of hands and fingers to handle welding tools and equipment.
  • Requires bending, reaching, twisting, and walking throughout the shift.
  • Requires strong visual acuity, depth perception, and the ability to focus on detailed work.

ITAR REQUIREMENTS:
