Position Summary: The Structural Engineering Intern is a temporary summer position for college students pursuing an undergraduate degree in civil engineering. The intern supports the structural engineering team by assisting with basic analysis, drafting, and documentation tasks under close supervision. This position is intended to provide practical exposure to structural engineering work, design processes, and the professional engineering environment while complementing academic coursework.

Immigration sponsorship or support (e.g. H1B, F-1 CPT/OPT/STEM OPT) is not available for this position, except for qualified candidates eligible for the TN visa classification.



Essential Functions and Responsibilities



  • Assist structural engineers with entry-level engineering tasks such as organizing calculations, performing basic hand calculations, and researching design criteria under supervision
  • Support preparation of structural drawings and details using CAD or BIM software
  • Help assemble calculation packages, quantity takeoffs, and technical exhibits for project submittals
  • Assist with shop drawing and submittal reviews by checking for completeness and consistency under engineer guidance
  • Participate in construction-phase activities such as site visits, inspections, and field documentation when available
  • Learn how structural designs are developed, reviewed, and coordinated with other disciplines
  • Follow established quality control procedures and ask questions to better understand engineering standards and practices
  • Participate in team meetings and collaborate with engineers, designers, and project staff
  • Receive mentoring and direction from supervising engineers

Required Skills

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office for basic documentation and communication
  • Ability to organize information and follow instructions carefully
  • Willingness to learn new technical concepts and software tools
  • Strong attention to detail and professionalism
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Ability to manage time and complete assigned tasks with guidance

Required Experience

Engineering (Structural Focus)



  • Full-time student pursuing an ABET-accredited undergraduate degree in civil engineering or a related field
  • Interest in structural engineering, including bridges, buildings, retaining walls, or transportation structures



Preferred Experience



  • Completion of introductory coursework in statics, mechanics of materials, or structural analysis
  • Exposure to CAD or drafting software through coursework or internships
  • Previous internship, summer job, or academic project related to engineering or construction



Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily in an office environment with occasional field visits to construction sites. Work is generally sedentary, with some standing and walking during site visits.
