Position Summary: We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Sr. MRI Specialist.
In this role, the successful candidate must have the ability to perform general and specialized MRI procedures of designated anatomical areas which meet the department's standard of quality; respond to allergic reactions and other life-threatening patient conditions arising while the patient is in the department; treat patients, visitors, and staff with courtesy and tact; maintain confidentiality of patient record and information; work effectively under stress and adjust priorities as circumstances require; organize work assignments, maintain accurate and complete records; maintain a high degree of accuracy in procedural detail record keeping; work independently on-call completing all required clerical and technical functions. Monitors and reviews the work of the staff and assist supervisors when necessary.
Job Responsibilities:
- Triage -
- Check for valid EPIC order vs Outside Rx
- Call and obtain Missing Rx
- Check for pertinent allergies, make note on GB and call patient about pre-medicating
- Check for indication vs exam ordered
- review patient chart/MD notes
- Call radiologist for clarification, advice to change exam
- If needed, Message ordering MD for correct order.
- If exam needs to be moved (due to implant, anesthesia, indication requires different scanner), email scheduling
- upgrade vs downgrade exams, add exam to auth work list.
- create protocol with radiologist for difficult exams
- Check patient implants
- confirm implant is safe for 3T, make note on GB
- Review patient screening forms (electronic forms done ahead of time)
- Check scheduling notes for additional information.
- Protocol Exams
- Protocol tech approved exams (neuro, msk and body)
- Finalize non-contrast exams
- Send contrast exams to radiologist worklist
- Train new techs and MRI trainees in all aspects of MRI Specialist Roles
- MRI safety include but not limited to implants, patient personal belongings, accompany persons, zones in MRI and scanner room safety
- IV placement

- Monitors the work of the staff in order to provide clear and accurate feedback to the supervisor regarding their performance. Reviews completed scan for quality and information; initiates corrective action, when needed. Completes weekend problem reports thoroughly. Ensures proper documentation of all incidents/accidents and keeps an accurate log of all problems.
- Effectively assesses patients information and status, and follows appropriate procedure(s) accordingly. Uses imaging and peripheral equipment, in a safe and productive manner in accordance with prescribed hospital, departmental and manufacturers procedures. Observes and reports any malfunctioning of the equipment and notifies appropriate persons in case of missing or damaged equipment. Independently implements patient procedures in accordance with departmental protocols and standards.
- Demonstrates skill in equipment set-up, utilization and proper maintenance procedure. Performs visual and manual quality control checks of radiographic equipment. Uses imaging and peripheral equipment, in a safe and productive manner in accordance with prescribed hospital, departmental and manufacturers procedures. Observes and reports any malfunctioning of the equipment and notifies appropriate persons in case of missing or damaged equipment.
- Independently implements patient procedures in accordance with departmental protocols and standards. Explains the procedure and equipment to the patient clearly. Solves problems that arise during patient examinations using both technical knowledge and innovation. Alters examination to maximize information in response to patients condition. Confers with other technologists concerning previous approaches utilized.
- Provides direction to the technical staff, facilitates patient flow through the department, and provides support to management. Ensures management is apprised of work situations and the performance of each employee, on an ongoing basis, giving clear and accurate information. Utilizes advanced expertise and problem-solving skills to assist staff in the performance of difficult cases and troubleshooting technical problems. Offers continuing guidance on work activities and procedures.
- Follows accepted radiologic procedures and uses medical information to determine type of protocol required for radiographic examination. Consults policy and procedure manuals and/or other reference materials as necessary to ensure actions conform to established protocols. Follows special instructions indicated on radiographic requisition. Recognizes need for and follows isolation precautions.
- In the role of an Expediter responsible to review patient prescription and safety forms. Obtains consents if necessary. Reviews patients requisition and understands the type of exam required by each requisition and confers with medical staff regarding clarification when necessary. Seeks information or asks for assistance from supervisor regarding difficult or questionable results.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree and 4+ yrs of MRI experience, required.
- ARRT Primary Certification/Registration, required.
- New York State License (Radiologic technology, Nuclear Medicine, Radiation Therapy), required.
- Intravenous Contrast Administration Certification in New York State, required.
- BLS Certification, required.
