Metro Transit
is one of the country's largest transit systems, employs more than 3,000 people, and provides ridership through an integrated network of buses, light rail and commuter trains, as well as resources for those who carpool, vanpool, walk or bike in the Twin Cities.

Metro Transit's Engineering Department is responsible for the development and construction of Metro Transit's public and support facilities. In the public facility area, they plan, design, and construct improvements to the rail and bus network including, for example, bus and rail stations, maintenance facilities, park and rides, and other passenger facilities. Design and Engineering, Structures has built and maintains over 150 structures - LRT, BRT, PED, and Freight Bridges & Tunnels and over 23 miles of retaining walls.

The Engineer/Senior Engineer applies professional skill and knowledge to engineering projects and systems performance monitoring and optimization. This position coordinates & plans structure inspections, repairs, and annual cleaning. They apply skills and knowledge to assess maintenance needs & establish priority of repairs & cleaning. They work collaboratively with structural engineers, inspectors, designers, and project partners to review and plan maintenance work. Incumbents are assigned more advanced project management or plan technical review responsibilities. Incumbents typically take on responsibility in planning, scheduling, conducting or coordinating detailed phases of the engineering work in a part of a major project or in a total project of moderate scope. They perform work that involves conventional engineering practice but may include a variety of complex features such as conflicting requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials, new treatment requirements and difficult project coordination requirements. They provide work direction to entry-level engineers and related technical staff.


Candidate's permanent residence must be in Minnesota or Wisconsin. This position is currently based out of our Heywood facility in Minneapolis. The incumbent will be required to work some nights and weekends. During the summer, the majority of the time is spent out in the field. During the winter, the incumbent will either work in office or from home.


What you would do in this job

  • Serves as the project manager for annual maintenance projects.
  • Select consultants, negotiate contracts, change orders and amendments; preparing and monitoring project schedules; monitoring, reviewing and coordinating project design; evaluating contractor requests for extra work, monitoring contractor's work and enforcing terms of the contract.
  • Assists structures inspection teams and other construction projects in the field.
  • Research for bridge information, file maintenance and GIS input.
  • Prepare cost estimates to determine project feasibility.
  • Prepare and review engineering studies, feasibility reports, engineer evaluations, technical memoranda, reports etc. to develop alternative solutions and answer "what if" scenarios by gathering and analyzing data.
  • Identifies and resolves design, specifications and construction problems relating to site conditions and unanticipated conditions.
  • Work mainly days, be willing to work nights and weekends when required.

What education and experience are required for this job (minimum qualifications)

Engineer ($39.69 - $64.41 Hourly / $82,555 - $133,973 Annually) Any of the following combinations of experience as an Engineer that includes construction and design and completed education in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field:

  • Bachelor's degree and two (2) years of experience.

Required Licensure:

  • Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam within six months of hire.
    Note: FE exam replaces the former Engineering in Training (EIT) exam.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

Senior Engineer ($42.90 - 69.63 Hourly / $89,232 - 144,830 Annually)
Any of the following combinations of experience as an Engineer that includes construction and design and completed education in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field:
  • Bachelor's degree and four (4) years of experience.

Required Licensure:

  • Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineer Exam (FE). Note: FE exam replaces the former Engineering in Training (EIT) exam.
OR
  • Must be registered as a Professional Engineer (PE) in the state of Minnesota or a state with reciprocity. PE licenses from other states must be transferred to Minnesota within six months of hire.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

What additional skills and experience would be helpful in this job (desired qualifications):
  • Civil Structural Professional Engineer certification.
  • Experience in the design and construction of one or more of the following:
    • Rehab/Repair of bridge/structures/Rail/Bus Stations
    • Rehab/Repair of parking structures and tunnels
    • Track, Rail Signals/Communications, Traction Power
    • Inspections with FRA and MNDOT SIMS
  • Experience in project management and coordination of multiple disciplines.
  • Experience and technical knowledge in the preparation of plans and specifications.
  • Experience in leading and facilitating meetings with very complex and detailed materials.
  • Experience in construction management.
  • Experience in scheduling and budgeting.
  • Experience building trust and relationships with people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures.

What knowledge, skills and abilities you should have within the first six months on the job:
  • Knowledge of engineering theories, principles and practical applications related to the area of assignment.
  • Knowledge of rules and regulations which apply to the specialty area.
  • Principles of capital improvement cost estimation and contract administration
  • Knowledge of Metropolitan Council Engineering and contract management policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluation alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting effective staff reports.
  • Knowledge of Civil, Bridges - Structural, Drainage, Signal, Electrical and Overhead Catenary, and Rail systems.
  • Knowledge of construction practices, methods, sequencing, drawings and specifications.
  • Demonstrated Project Management (PM) skills.
  • Skilled in communication techniques with consultants and contractors.
  • Verbal skills and persuasion in dealings with others both inside and outside of the department. Interactions with others generally require influencing, instructing and negotiating with individuals to gain their understanding, cooperation and action.
  • Ability to acquire Metro Transit, eRail Safe and Contractor Orientation Safety, confined space and fall protection Certifications.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers.
  • Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups or Council members
  • Ability to prepare scopes of work for design and construction and cost estimates.
  • Ability to promote an equitable, positive and respectful work environment that values cultural and diversity among all employees.

What your work environment would be:
Work is performed in a standard office setting as well as conducting field inspections and other duties at offsite locations as required. At times, this position will be exposed to near moving parts, fumes, airborne particles, outdoor weather conditions and vibration. Confined space entry at industry and various facilities is required.
