What Your Job Will Be Like

We are looking for a dedicated R&D Manager to lead the Optical Sensors Engineering Department 6783 within the Space Flight Systems Group. This department is responsible for the full lifecycle research and development of advanced optical systems, including their integration into both low- and high-rigor remote sensing systems.

The lifecycle begins with a thorough understanding of national security mission needs and collaboration with mission scientists to identify observable signatures. This is followed by the design and development of sensor systems that collect signals, which are then transformed into refined data products for national customers. The process often involves researching new optical materials, coatings, and fabrication technologies essential for achieving the desired sensor capabilities, as well as exploring packaging methods to meet size and weight constraints across various environments.

In addition to R&D efforts, the department currently oversees the integration, testing, and delivery of the Spectral Imaging Geolocation Hyper-Temporal Sensor (SIGHTS) Optical Sensor Assembly, while also investigating next-generation sensors for the Global Burst Detector space flight system. Throughout these activities, the department collaborates with program offices, sponsor communities, and cross-functional teams within the laboratory to address multi-disciplinary technical challenges.

Are you passionate about leading and developing teams that contribute to national security missions? Join our diverse team to create innovative solutions for unique national security challenges. On any given day, you may be called upon to:

  • Set the strategic vision for the department and pursue new and innovative opportunities.
  • Lead staff in developing new concepts and advancing technical solutions that create R&D opportunities for integration into both low- and high-rigor systems.
  • Foster and strengthen partnerships with peer managers, the broader laboratory community, and internal and external stakeholders to enhance collaboration across the research, development, and application spectrum.
  • Ensure the successful execution of deliverables within established budgets and timelines.
  • Build and maintain trusted relationships with internal project offices, the NNSA, and their partners.
  • Identify and pursue strategic investments to enhance the department's infrastructure and core capabilities.
  • Oversee staff development, including hiring, onboarding, professional development, and performance management.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and safety standards in all R&D activities.
  • Develop, maintain, and actively foster comprehensive lab safety guidelines and practices to ensure a safe working environment in both production and R&D laboratories.

Due to the nature of this work the selected applicant must be work onsite.

About Our Team

Center 6700 is the Global Security Remote Sensing organization whose mission is to support the national security missions involving nuclear proliferation detection, treaty monitoring, arms control, and various needs within the intelligence and military communities. It leads the integration of strategy, program, and processes for Sandia's remote sensing portfolio.

Posting Duration

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of three (3) calendar days, including the 'posting date'. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.

Security Clearance

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

EEO

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under state or federal law.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
