Job Summary
A Field Leader for Electric Operations - Substation provides leadership to a team of employees and/or contractors directly responsible for supporting emergencies on the Transmission & Distribution Electric System, performing general operational and maintenance tasks, and the installation of asset improvements. This role generally has an assigned geographic service territory and is expected to ensure the safe, reliable delivery of service to customers and communities. Field Leaders serve as role models for safe work practices, maintain a visible presence in the field, and help ensure work is performed in accordance with company standards and procedures. Field Leaders also actively manage the development and training of employees to improve individual and team performance. This position is generally on call 24 hours a day to support operational activities and electric system emergencies, as necessary.
Essential Functions
- Demonstrate safety leadership by promoting and assuring a safe working environment and supporting the continued improvement of electric operations public safety.
- Ensure all personnel perform safe work practices in accordance with NIPSCO's Safety Manual.
- Provide leadership, direction, and performance coaching to the front-line workforce.
- Facilitate effective two-way communication, particularly between front-line employees and the broader organization.
- Maintain a consistent and regular presence at work sites to provide leadership, direction, and feedback to front-line employees.
- Actively manage the development, training, and evaluation of front-line workers to improve individual and team performance.
- Manage and enforce the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, where applicable.
- Promote operational excellence by motivating, coaching, and developing staff to meet established objectives.
- Create an environment in which front-line workers are actively engaged in the principles and practices of Continuous Improvement.
- Ensure optimal use of resources by supporting the development and execution of teamwork plans, including proper management of Operating & Maintenance and Capital Budgets.
- Collaborate with and build strong working relationships with internal and external partners to coordinate work efforts.
- Ensure work is completed in accordance with company standards, regulations, processes, and procedures.
- Ensure employees effectively utilize tools and technology to complete daily work activities.

- Troubleshoot process systems, equipment failures, concerns, or inefficiencies when they occur.
- Respond to emergencies in accordance with established company procedures, incident command system structure, and storm recovery structure.
- Ensure all required training for personnel is current and compliant.
- Possess and maintain a valid State Driver's License and a clean driving record.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 2+ years of experience working with electric distribution and transmission substations, including troubleshooting, maintenance, and operational activities.
- Demonstrated knowledge and ability to quickly assess situations and make sound decisions during emergencies.
- Strong knowledge of on-the-job safety and compliance requirements.
- Ability to motivate stakeholders with varying priorities to achieve common goals.
- Strong organizational and planning skills.
- Ability to coach, develop, and lead employees.
- Demonstrated ability to use a variety of technologies required for everyday work tasks.
- Understanding single-line diagrams, engineering drawings, prints, and standards.
- Periodically assume duties of the department manager, as needed.
- Ability to work additional hours beyond 40 per week and travel out of town or overnight, as required to meet position expectations for storm or emergency response.
- Must be able to serve in a weeklong standby rotation, remaining available to respond to substation operational and emergency activities as required by Substation Operations.
- Ability to complete and submit a proper Request for Clearance
- Participation in regional standby rotations.
- Ability to work closely within the following software platforms: ITOA and ES01.
- Utilize and review the Cascade Maintenance Management System to ensure proper documentation of inspection and maintenance data and to address critical maintenance items.
- Review equipment life cycle and performance data and recommend capital replacement as appropriate.
- Direct responsibility for the operation, maintenance, and construction of all high-voltage electric substation equipment to ensure system reliability, public and employee safety, cost effectiveness, and proper asset management.
- Valid driver's license
Preferred Additional Qualifications
- Associate degree or bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution.
- Four (4) years of experience in the electric industry and/or a background within a related utility or skilled trades environment.
- Demonstrated leadership experience.
- Additional relevant certifications such as Project Management Professional (PMP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), or Professional Engineer (PE). Certifications may be obtained upon hire.
- Class A CDL Commercial Driver's License or the ability to obtain one.

Salary Range*: $96,600.00 - $144,900.00
*The salary offered to a candidate is based on several factors including but not limited to the candidate's skills, job-related knowledge, and relevant experience, as well as internal pay equity. Posting Start Date: 2026-03-16
