HJF is seeking a Data Manager II to assist with the research data handling requirements for a research study/protocol. This includes source document design, screen testing and approval, research data set creation and scientific graphics.

This position will be in support of Uniform Services University Center for Advanced Research for Military Optimization, Readiness, and Rehabilitation (ARMORR). The mission of ARMORR is to strengthen the fighting force and meet the complex neuro-musculoskeletal and rehabilitative needs of Service Members by leading innovative research and education efforts to optimize human performance, prevent injury, hasten accurate diagnoses, and improve recovery, readiness, and functional independence. The Data Management team within ARMORR works closely with the Center study teams on a wide research portfolio to ensure data collection practices, dataset development, and management over the life of a study.

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners. HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.

U.S. Citizenship required due to T3 Secret Clearance Requirements.


  • Develops data collection forms and assesses feasibility of data systems to meet research data handling needs.
  • Gathers and analyzes information from users needed for the development or modification of the data collection systems.
  • Interacts with members of the scientific support branch, management staff, and others to accomplish the data collection and quality needs of the study.
  • Establishes procedures for the quality assurance of all study databases. Plans and formulates policies, objectives and strategies for delivering quality assurance services and allocating quality assurance resources to endure data validity.
  • Assists researchers in retrieving information from the databases and other multiple data sources.
  • Provides research and management reports as requested. Provides expertise in dataset development, data regulatory guidance and security, and database design.
  • Provides ad hoc data sets for biostatisticians as required to ensure that research needs are being met.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years experience required

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Experience with REDCap database design.
  • Knowledge of clinical research data standards and common practices.
  • Experience managing datasets from multiple sources, de-identification practices, and merging datasets for statistical analysis.
  • Ability to develop script code in at least one language (R, SAS, SQL, Python, etc).
  • Knowledge of extract, transform, load (ETL) and development of data pipelines or workflows.
  • Experience with relational databases; can develop multi-join queries and follow an Entity-Relationship Diagram (ERD).
  • Excellent communication skills; ability to communicate technical needs and standards to a lay audience.
  • U.S. Citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a T3 Secret Clearance required.

  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in an office setting.

Compensation

  • The annual salary range for this position is $61,000-$82,000. Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
