FIREFIGHTER/EMT - INTERN (Unpaid/Volunteer)

Overview

The City of Waukesha Fire Department is accepting applications for the position of Firefighter/EMT-Intern (this is an Unpaid/Volunteer opportunity). Individuals who apply should be of excellent moral character and have a commitment to personal integrity and honesty. Minimum requirements to apply include (by date of application):

  • 18 years of age
  • High school graduate or recognized equivalent
  • Valid Driver's License

General Overview of Internship:

The Internship program will provide selected candidate(s) with up to 18 months of educational and field experience opportunities through the City of Waukesha Fire Department and the Wisconsin Technical College System. Interns will be offered the opportunity to become State of Wisconsin Firefighter Level 1 and Level 2, as well as Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Basic. Interns will gain experience after being assigned to a duty crew to participate in daily station activities, fire department training sessions, and respond to emergency calls. Interns must commit to a minimum of 12 hours each month of field experience. Interns will receive direct and close supervision by an appropriate City of Waukesha Fire Department supervisor. Disclaimer - There is no guarantee or expectation that selection/participation in the Internship Program will result in employment with the City of Waukesha Fire Department.

Selected Intern Candidates will:

  • Participate in training at a Wisconsin State Technical College in a classroom/practical environment to obtain State of Wisconsin Firefighter I certification and Emergency Medical Technician-Basic licensure, paid for by the City of Waukesha. Guidance will be given to enroll in appropriate certification and licensure program classes.
  • Under appropriate supervision by the City of Waukesha Fire Department, shadow and assist on-duty fire department members when they respond to emergency calls for service and when performing daily fire station duties to obtain hands-on experience in matters related to their educational coursework and to learn the culture and roles of individuals working for a fire department. Interns shall not participate in firefighting activities where conditions are immediately dangerous to life/health or provide direct patient care. Interns will provide a schedule of availability that includes at least 12 hours each month.
  • Satisfy academic performance requirements set by the City of Waukesha and recommended by the Technical College to remain in the internship program and remain eligible for tuition payment or reimbursement.
  • Follow and fully comply with the policies and procedures of the City of Waukesha and the directives of fire department member(s) overseeing their activities.
