Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Standards Engineer at UL Standards & Engagement. This is a hybrid opportunity based in Evanston, IL or Raleigh-Durham, NC.

The Senior Standards Engineer will support a diverse portfolio of standards and related initiatives, driving the technical quality, relevance, and integrity of safety standards to advance of the mission of UL Standards & Engagement (ULSE) to make the world safer, more secure, and sustainable. The Senior Standards Engineer will serve as a subject matter expert across broad technical areas and ensure safety standards are supported through disciplined engineering analysis, grounded in credible data, research and test evidence. The Senior Standards Engineer will apply engineering principles, data inputs, stakeholder insights and structured technical evaluation to strengthen standards content, identify gaps, support improvements, and help the organization respond more effectively to new and emerging technologies.

What you'll learn and achieve:

As the Senior Standards Engineer, you will play a key role in the rapid growth of UL as you:

  • Drive continuous improvement of safety standards, technical requirements and related guidance documents through the application of engineering principles and analytical methods.

  • Leverage experience in engineering to support project initiatives and serve as technical resource for assigned projects involving new standards development and revision of existing standards.

  • Manage end-to-end projects, plan and execute activities across the project lifecycle and ensure timely and high-quality deliverables.

  • Advance the technical rigor of standards, ensuring requirements are supported by engineering logic, relevant data, appropriate test methodologies, hazard based analysis, and practical implementation considerations.

  • Evaluate standards content for technical completeness, consistency and alignment with intended safety outcomes. Review technical proposals, draft revisions and stakeholder inputs to assess safety implications, feasibility and technical validity.

  • Analyze products, standards, and testing methodologies to gather insights and inform the preparation and composition of gap analyses, testing procedures and technical reports.

  • Provide engineering insight to support the organization's response to developments in new and emerging technologies, including identifying where current standards may require adaptation, supplementation or new approaches.

  • Work cross-functionally with standards development, and engagement teams to ensure alignment with broader organizational priorities.

  • Drive collaboration within the team to ensure team-level goal achievement and enable success in effective execution of standards activities.

  • Represent the organization as needed at industry related functions, such as seminars, conferences, trade shows, workshops, and technical forums.

  • Maintain continued awareness of industry trends and external context related to the portfolio. Stay current with regulatory requirements and compliance frameworks governing public safety.

  • Independently execute tasks that range in complexity and scope.

  • Perform other duties as directed.

  • Strategic thinker with ability to innovate and adapt in a dynamic industry landscape.

Professional education and experience requirements for the role include:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science or related technical discipline. Advanced degree preferred.

  • Minimum 5 years of directly related technical work experience.

  • Familiarity with product safety, standards development, testing, certification, regulatory compliance, or related technical area preferred.
