Overview:

We are seeking a Composites Process Engineer who will focus on manufacturing process development and deployment of polymer composites. This position resides in the Manufacturing Process Engineering Group in the Enrichment Science and Engineering Division (ESED) within the Isotope Science and Enrichment Directorate (ISED) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). ESED serves the nation in two critical areas: advancing enrichment technologies and exploring stable isotope production and applications. The division leverages an elite staff of scientists and engineers with the world-leading capabilities of ORNL to deliver groundbreaking advancements with a variety of applications, from national security to life-saving medical treatments. ESED is the national steward for the research, development, and demonstration of centrifuge technology innovations; advances electromagnetic isotope separations technology; and delivers stable isotopes for medical, industrial, and DOE mission critical applications.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

The selected candidate will be responsible for supporting the polymer composites development and deployment of prototypes with process & quality control engineering of fabrication, assembly and inspection techniques. The selected candidate will interface with principal investigators, management, engineers, technicians, internal and external fabrication shops, and other individual stakeholder personnel. This position's responsibility will include:

  • Process engineering for polymer composites manufacturing (which includes aspects of design, fabrication, inspection, and testing)
  • Providing manufacturability and general drawing reviews of designs to be fabricated
  • Developing detailed manufacturing build package documentation
  • Driving continuous improvements inmanufacturing, inspection, measurement, and process control activities
  • Act as the primary interface between project design and fabrication personnel
  • Disposition non-conformances and proactively address change incorporation to better align future work orders
  • Prepare quality deliverables in accordance with project processes and procedures
  • Write specifications and procedures to support inspection and testing
  • Aid in the planning of inspections and tests, and interpretation of data collected
  • Proposes corrective actions to improve compliance with quality specifications
  • Performs inspections and sets quality assurance testing models for inspection and testing of materials, parts, and products to ensure adherence to established quality standards and design basis

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or other related technical degree.
  • A minimum of 3 years of related manufacturing or testing experience
  • Experience with polymer and polymer matrix composite manufacturing methods, materials testing, and quality control
  • Demonstration of manufacturing experience in an R&D and/or a production environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Active DOE Q Clearance
  • Experience with filament winding or fiber placement fabrication processes
  • Application of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) per ANSI Y14.5
  • Experience with solid modeling and design software packages
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.

Special Requirements:

  • Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
  • Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
  • This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
