We are currently accepting applications for the full-time position of:

Assistant Public Grounds Superintendent
Department of Public Works

Anticipated Hiring Range: $86,986 annually
Excellent benefits package

The REQUIRED Town of Lexington application form and cover letter must be received in the

Summary
Organizes and directs maintenance programs and contract projects for redesigning and upgrading the
Parks, Cemetery and Forestry Divisions. Manages staff and department operations. Monitors and
assesses operations. Supervises and inspects non-office environments. Performs all other related work,
as required.

Essential Functions
The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work

* Manages Division's staff and operations. Supervises Working Foreman in the implementation,
monitoring, and assessment of operations.
* Provides daily direction to the Working Foreman and inspects work in the field to meet goal of
monitoring special operations, projects, or problem areas.
* Supervises and/or inspects in non-office environments, including garages and storage units, the
cemetery building, park buildings, parks and recreational areas.
* Participates in hiring. Conducts performance reviews and counsels employees.
* Assist in developing the Division's budget recommendations. Assists in managing the budget.
Prepares reports, analyses, and budgetary justifications. May participate in preparation and/or
administration of special grants.
* Develops, maintains, and updates data management and reporting systems for financial analyses,
compliance, and productivity. Produces reports.
* Assists in the development and/or design of special division projects, plans and/or specifications
involving external contractors. Participates in management of contractors.

* Responds to questions and complaints. Resolves issues. Updates Superintendent on significant
problems and resolutions. May attend public meetings with the Superintendent.
* Creates short and long-range work and vacation schedules. Advises staff on special work methods
and procedures, including safety precautions, regulations, and work issues.
* Purchases project materials, equipment, and supplies.
* Collaborates with other divisions to ensure effective use of personnel and equipment for emergency
situations or unusual workloads.
* Assists in supervising the Town's snow and ice operations as directed by the Highway
Superintendent.
* Participates in the" On-Call" rotation for issues and or emergencies outside of the normal working
hours.
* Assists with management of the Town's tree bylaw and other Town regulations.
* Follows safe work practices.
* Performs other similar or related duties, as required or as situation dictates.

Supervision
Supervision Scope: Performs varied and responsible functions requiring a specialized knowledge of
maintenance programs and contract projects for redesigning and upgrading the Parks, Cemetery and
Forestry Divisions and a knowledge of departmental operations and the exercise of judgment and
initiative, particularly in situations not clearly defined by precedent or established procedures.

Supervision Received: Works under the broad general guidance of the Public Grounds Superintendent,
setting and following department rules, regulations and policies. Duties require the ability to plan and
perform operations and independently complete tasks, and set time schedules.

Supervision Given: Supervises Public Grounds employees.

Recommended Minimum Qualifications
Education, Training and Experience
Associates degree or equivalent plus 2 (two) years of technical or business school and 8 (eight) years of
related experience, preferably, supervisory experience, or an equivalent combination of education,
training and experience are required. Computer literacy is required.

Special Requirements:
Massachusetts Class D Driver license is required.
CDL, Class B is preferred.
Massachusetts Hoisting Engineer License, Class 2A is preferred.
State of Massachusetts Pesticide License is preferred.
Massachusetts Arborist Association Certified Arborist or equivalent is required within 18 months of
hire.
NRPA Certified Playground Safety Inspector License is required within 12 months of hire.
NRPA or equivalent Pool Operator License is required within 12 months of hire.

Knowledge: Knowledge of business operations, finance, accounting and laws and regulations related to
Public grounds operations. Knowledge of public grounds operations, methods, and procedures. Specific
knowledge in area of specialty. Knowledge of procurement and purchasing practices. Knowledge of
financial administration, budget management, and reporting. Knowledge of information and data for
public grounds management. Knowledge and skill with principles and practices of record keeping and

reporting. Knowledge of administrative office practices and procedures. Knowledge of town
government. Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations for department
operations. Knowledge of best management practices.

Ability: Ability to interact appropriately and tactfully with customers. Ability to maintain detailed and
accurate records. Ability to explain department regulations, policies and procedures. Ability to work
independently. Ability to establish detailed timetables. Ability to multi-task. Ability to maintain
confidentiality. Ability to prepare routine correspondence and reports. Ability to plan, and schedule.
Ability to review staff work and performance. Ability to increase or maintain high levels of employee
engagement and staff productivity. Ability to manage budget and conduct analysis. Ability to resolve
conflict and maintain harmonious working relationships. Ability to demonstrate initiative. Ability to
apply practical knowledge to evaluate and resolve new or unusual situations. Ability to maintain and
organize work records and filing systems.

Skills: Proficient customer service and organization skills. Excellent written and verbal communication
skills. Proficient skill in consensus and team building. Proficient skill in hiring, evaluating, training,
disciplining, and terminating staff. Proficient computer skills with MS Office Suite applications.
Proficient skill with new and existing computers and software applications that support departmental
operations. Excellent supervisory skills. Proficient presentation and data tracking skills.

Job Environment
* Work is performed in office environment with moderate noise levels, and with frequent
interruptions. Work is occasionally performed in garages, water supply stations, sewer facilities,
landfills, parks and recreational areas. Work is frequently performed in outdoor weather
conditions. Work is subject to fluctuations, and administrative deadlines. Employee works
weekend day and evenings, and weekday evening meetings. Employee participates in the" On-
Call" rotation for issues and or emergencies outside of the normal working hours.
* Operates computer, printer, telephone, copier, facsimile machine, and all other standard office
equipment.
* The employee has frequent contact with businesses, developers, state organizations and Officials,
surrounding towns and cities, committees, boards, vendors, consultants, residents, and the public.
* The employee has access to confidential information.
* Errors could result in delays or loss of service, monetary loss, injuries to other employees,
damages to buildings and/or equipment, and legal ramifications.

The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to
successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to communicate or hear. Frequently the
employee is required to stand, walk, and climb, use hand to finger, handle or feel, and reach with hands
and arms. Occasionally work is performed in sustained uncomfortable physical positions, with exposure
to vibration from heavy equipment, and exposure to high noise levels. The employee must occasionally
lift and/or move objects weighing up to 30 pounds. Vision and hearing at or correctable to normal ranges
is necessary. This position requires the ability to operate a keyboard at efficient speed. This position
requires the ability to operate an automobile and heavy equipment.
