Overview
The Honors College is an academic and residential college (a Learning-Living Community), and our main building includes an administrative suite, seminar classrooms, 540 student beds, residential faculty fellows, and extensive programming spaces, all of which is prominently situated overlooking both the Raritan River and the Voorhees Mall, at the heart of the historic College Avenue/Old Queens campus. Given the unique nature of Rutgers, we also have residential and programming spaces across the five campuses in New Brunswick and Piscataway. We offer over 100 unique courses a year and well over 200 programs and events, many with a substantial academic orientation. We collaborate with six Schools throughout Rutgers and engage a total of 42 staff and administrators in our work and well over 100 faculty.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking an Assistant Dean III for Academics in the Honors College. The Assistant Dean will join the Honors College Dean and Associate Dean, in overseeing the assigned portfolio of academic operations, including curricular and co-curricular aspects of the College's operations for its nearly 4,000 high achieving students. The Assistant Dean will engage in coordinating all academic-based, centralized elements of the College including the curriculum of mission-based-courses, processes for Capstone and contract-courses, academic-based co-curricular programs, academic review, reporting, advising policies and practices, and overall alignment with the University's Academic Master Plan. The Assistant Dean will also help coordinate the sophomore and junior transfer policies and practices, ensuring alignment with the goals and objectives of the College. Likewise, the Assistant Dean will participate in both Honors College and University-wide committees, liaison with the Registrar, convene the Honors Advising Collaborative, maintain all academic policies and reports for the College, and overall academic operations. The Assistant Dean reports directly to the Associate Dean for day-to-day operations and works collaboratively with the Dean for strategic decision-making and planning.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Ensures that their program areas are among the best in the nation, by being up to date on the latest methods and research, engaging our campus-based partners, and ensuring that the intellectual and academic needs of our students are best served by both our model and practices.
  • Collaborates with faculty, including the Honors Council, for ensuring the alignment of advising and policy as appropriate for honors, to ensure the College's goals and objectives for graduating distinguished scholars.
  • Provides both internal and external assessments, including managing enrollment lists, graduation lists, Canvas sites for various academic programs and requirements, running reports for student success, probation, and dismissal, enrollment appeals, curriculum choice, and all aligned duties for other offices and collaborating partners.
  • Maintains close working relationships with the key stakeholders of the Honors College, including School deans of advising, department honors programs, the Offices of the Registrar, Financial Aid, and other key student-centered offices and supports.
  • Develops and implements the Honors College's co-curricular academic programming offered in the evening and on weekends.
  • Supports the Honors College initiatives focused on the recruitment, retention, academic success, and graduation of its high achieving students.

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Master's degree in higher education/academic or student services, or related field, and a minimum of three years of experience in supervision, academic program development, and academic advising.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience with budgeting and strong public relations skills.
  • Ability to deal with serious and sensitive issues requiring the maintenance of confidentiality and privacy.
  • Deeply knowledgeable about the mission of an honors college or program and the importance of academic student development as part of the overall mission.
  • A broad, sophisticated, and proven track record in academic advising, program-building, and administrative skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong understanding of the curricular requirements of the Schools at Rutgers University-New Brunswick.
