Current Assignment San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) is seeking a dynamic and experienced leader to serve as Section Manager, Elevator Escalator Maintenance within the Elevator and Escalator Maintenance Division.

Elevators and escalators are essential to the BART experience because they are what make the system usable for everyone, every day. For many patrons, they are the primary means of moving between street level, concourses, and platforms-especially in deep stations where stairs alone aren't a practical option. They support riders with disabilities, older adults, parents with strollers, travelers with luggage, and anyone with limited mobility or temporary injuries. When these systems work well, they quietly enable independence and confidence in navigating the transit system.

In this key leadership role, the selected candidate will be responsible for ensuring the safe, reliable, and continuous operation of elevator and escalator systems throughout the BART system, supporting seamless mobility for the riding public. They will supervise and coordinate field maintenance activities, balances workloads across shifts, and collaborates with internal teams, external agencies, and stakeholders. In addition, the position oversees inventory analysis, identifies material needs, and supports prioritization and scheduling of major repairs and extended outages, while providing high-level technical and administrative support to division leadership.

The most qualified candidate for this position will have highly developed competencies beyond the minimum qualifications in the following areas, which will be reinforced with related work experience and will be clearly articulated during the selection process:
  • Mastery of elevator and escalator systems, equipment, tools, and maintenance methods
  • Knowledge of transit elevator/escalator infrastructure, similar to BART
  • Advanced proficiency with MAXIMO CMMS for maintenance tracking and analysis
  • Strong background in preventive maintenance and corrective repair programs
  • Experience with conducting root cause analysis to reduce repeat failures and improve system reliability
  • Proven experience in elevator/escalator maintenance and troubleshooting
  • Strong analytical skills with data-driven maintenance decision-making experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Competent familiarity of BART's revenue vehicle operating environment, including train operations, passenger stations, wayside conditions and the Operations Control Center (OCC)
  • Adept knowledge of conveyance operations, rules, and procedures and Federal and California labor laws, OSHA, IIPP and PUC requirements
  • CCCM license is preferred

Examples of Duties

  1. Oversees and coordinates the organization, staffing and operational activities on an assigned shift responsible for the maintenance and repair of elevators and escalators.

  2. Participates in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies and priorities; recommends and implements resulting policies and procedures.

  3. Identifies opportunities for improving service delivery methods and procedures; identifies resource needs; reviews with appropriate management staff; implements improvements.

  4. Plans daily, weekly and long term work schedules and projects; directs, coordinates and reviews the work plan for assigned elevator and escalator maintenance and repair services on an assigned shift.

  5. Assigns work activities and projects; monitors work flow; reviews and evaluates work products, methods and procedures; meets with staff to identify and resolve problems.

  6. Conducts on-the-job technical and safety training for assigned maintenance employees; researches and resolves staffing issues and concerns.

  7. Maintains maintenance records of time and materials; prepares a variety of statistical reports.

  8. Oversees and participates on elevator and escalator rehabilitation projects; coordinates upgrades of obsolete system equipment; works closely with machine shops to repair and replace needed parts; salvages usable parts.

  9. Coordinates the work with that of other maintenance supervisors on a large or complex project that may require assistance from several maintenance specialties.

  10. Selects, trains, motivates and evaluates assigned personnel; provides or coordinates staff training; works with employees to correct deficiencies; implements discipline and termination procedures.

  11. Provides staff assistance to the Superintendent of Power and Mechanical Maintenance; participates on a variety of committees; prepares and presents staff reports and other correspondence as appropriate and necessary.

  12. Coordinates elevator and escalator maintenance and repair activities with those of other shifts, divisions and outside agencies and organizations.

  13. Attends and participates in professional group meetings; stays abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of elevator and escalator maintenance and repair.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Possession of a high school diploma, GED, or recognized equivalent.

Experience: Four (4) years of (full-time equivalent) verifiable experience in the maintenance and repair of elevators and escalators which must have included at least two (2) years of administrative and/or supervisory experience.

Other Requirements: Must possess a valid California driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record.

  • Current and complex principles and practices of safety as they pertain to elevator and escalator repair and maintenance.
