Engineering Manager - Custom Machine Design (Automation & Capital Equipment) Location: Milwaukee Area \| Full-Time About the Role We're hiring an Engineering Manager to lead the design and development of custom-built machinery and automation systems. This is a hands-on leadership role-not just people management. You'll guide a team of mechanical and electrical engineers while staying close to the work: reviewing designs, solving technical challenges, and ensuring projects move from concept to build efficiently. If you've designed custom equipment and want to lead a team doing the same, this is where you'll have real impact. What You'll Do Lead and mentor a team of engineers (mechanical, electrical, controls) Oversee custom machine design projects from concept through build and validation Review and contribute to designs (mechanical systems, automation, integration) Drive project execution-timelines, resources, and technical direction Collaborate with customers to define requirements and deliver solutions Support design for manufacturability, assembly, and serviceability Work cross-functionally with manufacturing, assembly, and field service teams Troubleshoot complex system issues during build, testing, or installation Establish and improve engineering standards, processes, and documentation Identify opportunities for innovation, cost reduction, and performance improvements What You Bring 7-12+ years of experience in custom machine design, automation, or capital equipment Prior leadership experience (Engineering Lead, Supervisor, or Manager) Strong background in mechanical system design (frames, motion systems, tooling, etc.) Experience working on build-to-order or highly customized equipment Ability to review CAD designs and guide engineering decisions Strong communication skills-able to work with customers and internal teams Proven ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines Preferred Experience Experience with automation systems (integration with controls, robotics, etc.) Familiarity with SolidWorks, Inventor, or similar CAD platforms Understanding of manufacturing processes (machining, fabrication, assembly) Experience in industries such as packaging, converting, material handling, or special machinery Compensation & Benefits Competitive salary based on experience Performance-based incentives Health, dental, and vision insurance 401(k) with company match Paid time off Opportunity to lead impactful, highly customized engineering projects How to Apply Submit your resume to be considered.
