Responsibilities PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Day-to-day responsibilities include: * Conducting histories and comprehensive physical exams to evaluate patients for surgery. * Performing daily rounds on surgical inpatients and provide continuity in care * Ordering and interpreting tests, developing and implementing treatment plans, performing patient education, preparing discharge plans, prescribing medications. * Comprehensive and clear documentation of patient progress (using EPIC as the EMR) * Performing bedside procedures (ex: I&Ds; insert/remove/manage tubes, drains, and catheters, wound care, casting/splinting; arthrocentesis, etc.) * Consulting and collaborating with medicine and/or other specialists as needed * First-assisting in the OR: Specialties including General, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, Colorectal, Gynecologic, Thoracic, Breast, Plastics, ENT, Urology, and Vascular. Prior experience in Robotics is highly preferred * Admissions and surgical consultations * Responding to Trauma Activations, if covering the trauma service. * Communicating and coordinating patient care with nurses, case management/social work, PT/OT, and consulting teams. Qualifications PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT * The NP/PA continuously engages in projects that maintain and advance professional competency. * The NP/PA serves as a clinical resource for new house staff and may provide service specific orientation pertinent to clinical education * Consistently demonstrates high reliability organizational behaviors through reporting safety events as well as near misses. * The NP/PA continuously engages in projects that maintain and advance professional competency. * Maintains all employee requirements determined by hospital policy. * The NP/PA may serve as a clinical preceptor for NP/PA students and other health care professionals and may serve as a mentor to pre-PA/NP candidates. * The NP/PA may collaborate on research, quality assurance and performance improvement projects, and assist with the formation of protocols that will be applied to clinical practice or further their educational and clinical expertise. EXPERIENCE * On the job training provided. However, surgical inpatient experience of 1-3 years, training in robotics, and/or surgical residency training is highly preferred. * PA/NP will be required to be appointed to the Affiliated Medical Staff of a YNHHS Hospital and credentialed through the Medical Staff process. Evidence of current competence to practice as a PA/NP via appropriate reference letters from physicians and other practitioners must be able to be obtained during the Medical Staff appointment process in order to be eligible. EDUCATION, TRAINING, LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS * Graduates of an accredited Physician Assistant with NCCPA certification / Nurse Practitioner Program * Eligible for Connecticut State License and State & Federal Controlled Substance Registration * BLS required. ATLS required for APPs covering trauma service.
