The Chemist II supports the Rail and Marine Industries and leads activities related to maintenance of business and quality investigations in various technologies including but not limited to epoxies, urethanes, alkyds, zinc rich coatings, etc. The incumbent will have opportunities to provide support to internal customers such as management, manufacturing, marketing, quality, and commercialization and will also support external customers such as the US Navy.

Job duties include contact with other employees and access to confidential and proprietary information and/or other items of value, and such access may be supervised or unsupervised. The Company therefore has determined that a review of criminal history is necessary to protect the business and its operations and reputation and is necessary to protect the safety of the Company's staff, employees, and business relationships.

This role will be located at Sherwin-Williams Morikis Global Technology Center located at 1 Innovation Parkway, Brecksville, OH 44141.


  • Designs and executes experiments, draws conclusions, and makes recommendations
  • Maintaining accurate and detailed documentation of lab work and providing written updates and presentation of technical materials.
  • Communicates with other departments/functions and has a wide network of resources and knows who their resources are.
  • Function under limited supervision and be able to independently design experiments and write reports with limited review
  • Accountable for contributing solutions to mildly complex projects
  • Communicate detailed ideas concisely through written communication by writing technical reports.
  • Comply with and displays knowledge of all safety and security regulations and maintain a clean work area
  • Travel for technical conferences and product commercialization support Provide outside customer service
  • Train or mentor new or lower level chemists and technicians
  • Adhere to company safety standards at all times
  • Adheres to quality standards in accordance with the Global Business Management System

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the country of employment without needing sponsorship for employment work visa status now or in the future (e.g., OPT, CPT, H1B, EB-1,etc.)
  • Bachelor's degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math field.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must have 3 years of industrial formulation experience.
  • Experience with waterborne coatings for industrial applications.
  • Familiarity with application and troubleshooting of industrial coatings.
  • Computer knowledge for basic inputting, communication, data analysis and statistics.
  • Analytical chemistry and the ability to extend it beyond the realm of coatings.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • BA/BS Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Material Science.
  • Experience with industrial solventborne coatings such as epoxy, urethane, alkyd and/or polysiloxane.
  • Experience with industrial marine coatings.
  • Proficiency with conventional & airless spray methods.
  • Familiarity with US Navy coatings specifications.
  • Experience with Design of Experiment

Travel Requirements: 10% Domestic

This position is not eligible for sponsorship for work authorization now or in the future, including conversion to H-1B visa.

Successful candidate will be required to sign an Employee Restrictive Covenant Agreement where permitted by law.
