The Senior Clinical Veterinarian is responsible for ensuring the health and welfare of laboratory animals used in research and supporting the scientific objectives of the institution by providing expert veterinary care, overseeing animal research protocols, and collaborating with research teams to maintain compliance with ethical and regulatory standards.
Essential Function:
-Provide high-quality veterinary care to laboratory animals, including medical treatment, surgery, and preventive medicine to ensure their health and well-being.
-Review and approve animal research protocols, ensuring they adhere to ethical guidelines, animal welfare regulations, and institutional policies.
-Provide training and guidance to research staff and animal care technicians on proper animal handling, experimental procedures, and compliance with animal welfare regulations.
-Maintain accurate and up-to-date veterinary records, including animal health assessments, medical treatments, and surgical procedures.
-Ensure compliance with all relevant animal welfare regulations, institutional guidelines, and reporting requirements to regulatory agencies.
-Implement and oversee health monitoring programs to detect and manage potential disease outbreaks within the animal colony.
-Conduct regular animal welfare assessments, environmental enrichment evaluations, and pain management evaluations to enhance the well-being of research animals.

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Veterinary Medicine required

ACLAM Board Certified

Experience
Laboratory Animal Medicine Experience 5-7 years preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- In-depth knowledge of laboratory animal care and management, animal welfare regulations, and ethical considerations in animal research.
- Proven leadership skills with the ability to manage a team, collaborate with researchers, and make informed decisions regarding animal care and research protocols.
- Strong problem-solving abilities to address veterinary and research-related challenges and implement effective solutions.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects, ensuring that research activities and animal care responsibilities are effectively coordinated.
