Position Overview




Essential Job Duties
The Small Animal Internal Medicine Service at the NC State Veterinary Hospital is seeking a highly motivated veterinarian for a one to two-year Small Animal Internal Medicine Fellowship. This program is specifically designed for individuals pursuing an academic career path, providing a bridge between residency training and a faculty role. Candidates will engage in advanced clinical service and specialized research training.

Specialized Tracks:
Applicants must select one of three core focus areas for their fellowship. Each track is designed to provide mastery in a research field while maintaining a strong foundation in general internal medicine:

  1. Aerodigestive Disease
  2. Vector-Borne Diseases
  3. Education and Artificial Intelligence


Program Structure & Responsibilities:


  • Clinical Commitment: 25 weeks per year on the Small Animal Internal Medicine service.

  • Specialized Training: Hands-on clinical and research experience directly tailored to your chosen track.

  • Professional Development: Earn professional certificates in your specialty where available (such as Teaching Certificate for the Education track).

  • Research: Completion of a research project suitable for publication in a peer-reviewed journal, with a focus on your chosen sub-specialty.

Eligibility & Requirements:



  • Educational Background: Must have successfully completed an ACVIM or ECVIM-approved Small Animal Internal Medicine residency.

  • Career Goals: A demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in academia (teaching, research, and clinical service) is essential.
  • Must be eligible for North Carolina veterinary licensure and/ or faculty certificate under the supervision of the NC State Veterinary Hospital.

Board Certification: ACVIM Diplomates may be eligible to enroll in an ACVIM-approved fellowship
