Compensation Range $50,488-66,347
Summary
The Cybersecurity Technician is responsible for assisting senior personnel with evaluating and maintaining secure processes for the college's networks and workplace infrastructure. This technician is also responsible for scheduled escalations serving as the tier 2 for our Technology Service Center personnel. Ensuring end-user satisfaction and implementing industry best practices are key elements in this position. The Cybersecurity Technician needs to be able to work efficiently and independently to assist senior cyber personnel in resolving issues and produce quality work products for the college.
Essential Role Responsibilities

  • Assist with cyber security protocols and best practices
  • Monitor dashboard of existing firewalls and cyber systems
  • Participate in project scoping discussions and implementation of security and technical projects
  • Possible on-call rotation duties as necessary
  • Assist in evaluating and providing cyber related hardware and software recommendations for campus deployment.
  • Account for all core work in the ITSM call tracking database, including documented status and resolution information, while tracking time worked.
  • Document and maintain processes and procedures for the information security department.
  • Handling work tickets from various vendors for evaluation and resolution in addition to software/service approvals and other cybersecurity related tasks.
  • Assist with cybersecurity education and awareness initiatives
  • Assist in investigating, handling, and documenting cybersecurity related incidents.
  • Research current cybersecurity trends and provide recommendations to management.
  • Provide status reports to management.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education Required Associate's degree
Experience Required
Associates Degree in CS or related program preferred or 2 years of technical experience or an approved combination of education, training and experience.

  • Security+ preferred.

  • Strong technical aptitude and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work on multiple priorities and/or deadlines simultaneously
  • Excellent listening and communications skills, both verbal and written
  • Organized, detail-oriented and self-motivated
  • Ability to provide and maintain detailed documentation on each job
  • Strong computer skills and the ability to effectively communicate
  • Knowledge in basic cyber security concepts and protocols
  • Willingness to develop professionally
  • Basic knowledge in routers, layer 2/3 switches, and other networking devices
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Server Operating Systems and Networks
  • Basic knowledge of mainstream operating systems (e.g., Mac OS, Windows 10, 11, Linux etc.)* Basic knowledge of firewall and cyber security best practices
  • Demonstrated ability to navigate both top/down and bottom/up troubleshooting approaches
  • Basic knowledge of networking communication layers and protocols.
  • Basic knowledge of Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol
  • Basic knowledge of domain naming systems (DNS)
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Active Directory
  • Basic knowledge for evaluating Email headers
  • Basic knowledge for evaluating packet captures
  • Basic knowledge of scripting (Powershell, Python, Javascript, etc.)
  • Basic knowledge of mitigating operating system vulnerabilities
  • Basic knowledge of cybersecurity principles, and methods in compliance programs


OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Regular attendance is a requirement of this job.
  • Performs all duties while considering the impact of any actions on the college's sustainability initiatives in the areas of environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and economic prosperity.

  • Hours as assigned, including the possibility of evening or weekend coverage.
  • May occasionally travel to other HCC campus sites.

As a participating member of the Maryland Retirement and Pension System, HCC offers two retirement options: The Pension, which requires a 7% employee contribution and The ORP, a 403(b) with a 7.25% employer contribution only. Employees in positions that do not require a bachelor's degree must participate in The Pension. Employees that possess a bachelor's degree and hold professional positions that require a bachelor's degree may choose to participate in either The Pension or The ORP.
