Departmental Overview

The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics consists of more than 275 staff members and coaches and sponsors 30 varsity sports programs. These 30 programs include more than 850 student-athletes who participate in the various sports programs annually within the National Collegiate Athletics Association.

Position Summary

The Associate Director, Email Marketing & Community Outreach supports the department's digital growth by assisting with the transformation of fan data into content that promotes the Cal brand, fan engagement, and revenue goals. Working under the direction of the digital lead, this position helps coordinate a consistent "digital fan journey" across various platforms including the official website, mobile app, email campaigns, and social media. The Associate Director - Email Marketing & Community Outreach assists with the execution of digital campaigns aimed at enhancing the program's reputation for recruiting and fan loyalty. This role collaborates with internal units to ensure digital tools are used effectively and supports the maintenance of external partnership contacts. Additionally, this position assists in supervising student interns and helps deliver training on digital storytelling to ensure a consistent brand voice.

Responsibilities

Digital Campaign Execution

  • Design and execute targeted email campaigns and journeys.
  • Convert fan data into personalized content.
  • Boost ticket sales, donations, and other revenue streams.

Community & Brand Outreach

  • Build brand affinity through local initiatives.
  • Create relationships with external community partners including Bay Area professional sports teams.
  • Create touchpoints that turn locals into fans.

Cross Platform Content Strategy

  • Sync email messaging with Cal's tech stack inclusive of the app and web.
  • Ensure a consistent "digital fan journey."
  • Tell authentic stories that resonate with recruits, fans, and new consumers.

Data Driven Engagement

  • Analyze fan behavior to optimize email campaigns.
  • Use digital tools to track revenue growth.
  • Transform raw data into actionable marketing assets.
  • Creating reports tools with success metrics for leadership.

Build Student Engagement and Affinity

  • Educate incoming freshmen.
  • Create engagement model for different types of student groups.
  • Create awareness and engagement on campus.

Mentorship and Brand Alignment

  • Supervise and train a team of interns.
  • Maintain a unified voice across all units.
  • Teach digital storytelling best practices to staff.

Required Qualifications

  • Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of design and user experience, including skill to design in an appealing, lively and relevant way.
  • Thorough understanding of technical language and requirements of the assigned work.
  • Thorough knowledge of content management systems and / or relevant web applications used for web production and organization-specific computer application programs and/or the ability to learn.
  • Thorough skills to create clear, easy-to-navigate, informative, accurate, well-designed, and functional web sites that provide web content consistent with the organization's message and in keeping with management directives and client objectives.
  • Thorough understanding of organization's processes, procedures, and applicable rules and regulations for web communications and/or the ability to learn.
  • Thorough technical skills in computer applications for web production, image handling, publishing and design, illustration, presentation preparation, animation, web interaction, and / or other state-of-the-art web communication capabilities.
  • Thorough interpersonal communication skills.
  • Thorough skills to develop and implement original ideas and correctly identify and effectively solve problems.
  • Skills and experience with creating clear, easy-to-navigate, informative, accurate, well-designed, and functional web sites that provide web content consistent with the organization's message and in keeping with management directives and client objectives.
  • Knowledge of the fundamentals of design and user experience, including skill to design in an appealing, lively and relevant way.
  • Experience in tracking a customer lifecycle using tools and dashboards.
  • Understanding of how to integrate Name, Image, and Likeness opportunities into the broader college athletics commercial environment.
  • Ability to identify and reach a network of digital influencers.
  • Ability to align the data from Creative, Development, and Ticket Office units under one digital framework.
  • Problem-solving skills; multi-task, and effective listener.
  • Skills in coaching and mentoring lower level staff, students, and interns.
  • Time and project management skills to effectively establish priorities and meet competing deadlines both for themself and the team.
  • Interpersonal communications and people management skills to interact effectively with a variety of clients, staff and vendors.
  • Ability to plan and adhere to a set budget.
  • Must maintain current knowledge of applicable rules and standards of the ACC Conference, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), as well as other associations and agencies to which the Berkeley campus of the University of California adheres, and, at all times avoid any and all violations of these rules and standards and/or the ability to learn.

Education / Training

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted annual salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $83,000 - $90,000.

  • This is an exempt, monthly-paid position.
  • This is a full-time (40 hours/week) Staff: Career position eligible for UC benefits.
