Idaho National Laboratory requires Electrical Engineers to shape the future of energy innovation by advancing critical nuclear and grid technologies that secure America's energy infrastructure and scientific leadership. You'll perform detailed analyses on power transmission and distribution systems to inform development and design decisions, pursue solutions for secure, sustainable, and resilient electrical power systems, and apply engineering principles in the design and execution of power-related experiments. Your responsibilities include collaborating with customers to develop system alternatives and analyze risks, providing technical reviews of design outputs and ensuring compliance with requirements, establishing configuration management of assigned systems, developing functional requirements and test procedures, and coordinating testing activities with other engineers. You'll evaluate system performance to improve efficiency and reliability, create and execute design of experiments, mentor junior engineers, and oversee design and maintenance of high-risk electrical systems operations.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Perform detailed analyses on power transmission and distribution systems to inform development and design decisions.
  • Collaborate with customers to develop system alternatives and analyze risks, costs, and performance measures.
  • Provide technical reviews of design outputs and ensure compliance with technical baseline requirements.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with other engineers and partners to execute testing activities.
  • Provide input on the functionality of test equipment and support procurement activities.
  • Mentor junior engineers and technical personnel.
  • Oversee the design and maintenance of high-risk electrical systems operations.
  • Review electrical designs, specifications, drawings, vendor submitted data, and INL Laboratory Instructions
  • Inspect/approve electrical installations to the requirements of the NEC.
  • Inspect/approve non-NRTL listed equipment, NRTL listed equipment modified for specific INL research needs, and Laboratory designed/assembled electrical equipment for approval and make recommendations for modifications necessary for compliance to the NEC.
  • Assist NEC AHJ with maintaining the INL NEC AHJ Program and other related responsibilities as delegated by the NEC AHJ.
  • Assist the INL AHJ with the application and enforcement of the National Electrical Code (NEC), NFPA 70, for the INL facilities and research programs.
  • Review and approval of electrical related design drawings, specifications, and vendor data for new construction and significant modifications.
  • Enforcement of the NEC with responsibility for making interpretations of the rules, for deciding on the approval of equipment and materials, and for granting the special permissions contemplated in a number of rules, including the waiving of specific requirements where specific rules are established in the NEC.
  • Coordinate field representative resources as necessary to support the completion of required field activities in a manner that minimizes project delays to the extent practical.
  • Assist with assessment of overall AHJ program effectiveness on a periodic basis and make improvements where necessary.

Required:

  • Level 3: Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering or directly related engineering degree from a program accredited by ABET and 5 years of experience or Master's degree and 2 years of experience.
  • Level 4: Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering or directly related engineering degree from a program accredited by ABET and 9 years of experience or Master's degree and 6 years of experience.
  • National Electrical Code (NEC) knowledge required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE "Q" clearance, which requires US Citizenship
  • Certification such as Commercial Electrical Inspector and or Building Plans Examiner through the International Code Council (ICC) or the International Association of Electrical Inspectors (IAEI) is a plus. NOTE: if the applicant does not have one of these certifications, it will be a requirement of maintaining the position for the employee to get one of these certifications within one year.

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Professional Engineering (PE) License.
  • Experience in R&D, systems engineering, and electrical power systems.
  • Experience designing, developing, and/or conducting experiments with electrical equipment.
  • Experience working with high-risk equipment, safety requirements, and procedures.
  • Familiarity with electrical engineering, instrumentation and control, and software systems applicable to experimental processes.

This role requires strong technical skills in electrical engineering, including power systems analysis, design, and experimentation. Effective communication, problem-solving, and the ability to mentor junior staff are also essential. Familiarity with applicable safety requirements and the ability to work in various conditions are crucial.
