Overview The Customer Meter Engineer, under the general supervision of the Section Manager, performs and provides the highest degree of technical capability and expertise in electric revenue metering by developing methods, procedures, specifications, software and hardware requirements for the application, initialization and testing of revenue metering equipment and identifying improvements for efficient shop operation. Additionally, will support the Meter Test Program; Instrumental Traceability, Part 92 operating manual. Will coordinate with the PSC and BPU in support of the Meter Test Program. Defines revenue metering requirements and ensures design, equipment and application are in accordance with PSC and NYISO Rules and Regulations and Departmental Procedures and Goals. This position does not provide employment pursuant to the terms of a STEM OPT Training Plan. Responsibilities
Core Responsibilities
- Ensures implementation of company safety, health, and environmental programs for employees whose work is directed, and ensures safe work practices and environmental protection in accordance with company policy and governmental regulations. Promotes and participates in company safety and accident prevention programs.
- Assists in planning, organizing, and controlling all electric metering compliance activities related to electric meters, including Smart Meters and Opt Out Meters for Customer Meter Operations (CMO).
- Assists in the development of metering and tool forecasting and ensures responsibilities and goals are achieved within budgetary guidelines. Coordinates with vendors and other departments in analyzing new metering systems and their impact on shop test and repair operations and corporate billing systems, and supports and manages the Meter Test Program.
- Develops, implements, evaluates, and monitors testing procedures and strategies to ensure regulatory testing guidelines are met for all electric meters, including Smart Meters and Opt Out Meters for CMO.
- Conducts training as necessary to enhance the skill set of CMO departmental personnel.
- Evaluates customer drawings, metering equipment, and related interface measurement equipment, and develops standard designs, drawings, and specifications in conjunction with company standards. Assists in the review and approval of company electric metering equipment for use in ORU and RECO service territories and travels within the service territories as required.
- Works effectively with internal and external customers, regulatory bodies, and union officials on matters related to CMO.
- Participates in the companys emergency management processes and storm plans as required.
- Updates metering computer software applications and provides computer support, including application and programming support, for all CMO applications, and evaluates and recommends new technology applications.
- Assists in the timely purchase of meters, transformers, and other metering devices, acts as a departmental liaison with Utility of the Future representatives, and assists in the development and review of CMO procedures and policies.
- Participates in PSC meetings and industry metering committees when required and provides technical support to departments including Meter and Test, Revenue Protection, Energy Efficiency, Energy Services, New Business, and Customer Operations.
- Performs other related tasks, assignments, and special projects as required.
Qualifications
Required Education/Experience
- Bachelor's Degree and Minimum 5 years of related work experience within an electric metering and/or electric field. Work experience can be comprised of hands on work, supervision, or administration.
Preferred Education/Experience
- Bachelor's Degree Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering
- Master's Degree
Relevant Work Experience
- Directly related experience or equivalent work within an electric metering and/or electric field is required. Work experience can be comprised of hands on work, supervision, or administration, required.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint), required.
- Must have the ability to effectively interact with customers, support staff and various levels of management, required.
- Excellent oral and written communications skills, required.
- Must be well organized, detail oriented and flexible, required.
- Demonstrated knowledge of utility metering, distribution and transmission, required.
- Experience in software applications and maintenance, preferred.
- Demonstrated work experience with regulatory agencies, preferred.
- Demonstrated experience with standard designs, drawings and specifications, preferred.

Additional Physical Demands
- The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Must be willing to travel inside and outside the Company service territory as needed.
