We're seeking a Senior Data Engineer/Architect to build the data foundation behind IDEXX's CAG Diagnostic Software (DxSW) portfolio and Point of Care analytics. You'll own the pipelines, models, semantic layers & the governance leveraged by analysts, agents, and customers.
Ideal candidates will have the ability to work in a hybrid capacity in our Westbrook, ME location 2x per week or 8x per month.
Why this role matters:
CAG Diagnostic Software products generate some of the most valuable data at IDEXX, and that data requires strong governance: thoughtful architecture, context-rich modeling, and widespread metadata curation. Today, analysts, applications, and AI tools all depend on a trusted, governed, wellmodeled layer to deliver data and insight. This role builds a scalable, future-proof data foundation to enable the enterprise.
Your work determines how reliably our teams can analyze instrument performance, understand customer experience, and generate AIenabled insights across IDEXX's diagnostic portfolio. You'll drive our dbt transformation, build the certified layers our reports and agents read from, and create quality gates and documentation that instills trust in data.
In this role:
- Own the data architecture fo CAG Diagnostic Software and Point of Care analytics. Build, sequence, and defend the data and analytic engineering roadmap.
- Build & manage the medallion architecture in Snowflake, ingestion through Gold. All transformation logic in dbt: versioned, tested, reviewed.
- Own the certified semantic layer that our BI tools (Sigma, Tableau), self-serve exploration & AI agents read from.
- Establish quality and observability monitoring across our data systems, ensuring our SLAs for accurate, available data are met.
- Own the architecture standards for our environment: integration patterns, data contracts, naming, testing.
- Own the metadata layer in Snowflake: manage data catalog adoption across the team, helping ensure every certified asset in Alation has a defined owner, description, lineage & freshness.
- Mentor and lead a team of engineers & analysts, and raise the SQL, git & modeling bar across the group.
- Build AI into the work: automated quality checks, agent-ready datasets, tooling that enables self-serve and automation.
What you need:
- Deep dbt or equivalent experience. You should have conviction about project structure, testing & documentation, and be able to defend your point of view.
- Deep Snowflake or equivalent experience: analytic engineering, tuning, architecture, cost, model design.
- Dimensional, wide-table & hybrid modeling, at the finest grain.
- Experience building and maintaining pipelines & orchestration in production. Airflow experience preferred.
- Git & CI/CD, including establishing review discipline and best practices for the team.
- Expert SQL capabilities. You'll continue to code in this role as well as lead and mentor your team. Additional scripting languages like Python are preferred, but not required.
- Deep experience building with AI tools (Claude, Cortex Code, etc.). AI accelerates all that we do as a team.
- Management experience is highly preferred, but not required. You'll lead a small team of engineers.
- You can explain technical trade-offs to non-technical audiences. You're comfortable influencing architecture / system designs with R&D engineering.
- You care about naming conventions, business definitions, and context engineering.
Nice to have:
- Telemetry, IoT, software, instrument or medical device data.
- Semantic layers feeding BI tools, APIs or agents.
- Warehouse-native AI: semantic models, agent frameworks, natural language query.
- Alation, DataHub or similar catalogs.
- Veterinary diagnostics or healthcare data.
What you can expect from us:
- Base salary range of $130,000 to $160,000 based on experience
- Opportunity for annual cash bonus
- Health / Dental / Vision Benefits Day-One
- 5% matching 401k
